Please note the traffic detour information below…

TRAFFIC ADVISORY
I-205 path users to see minor detour for next two weeks near E Burnside

The Portland Bureau of Transportation advises the traveling public that roadway construction will detour the I-205 ODOT Multiuse Path from October 31 through approximately November 18. Pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be detoured from the path onto adjacent streets during construction.

Bicyclists will be provided with signage that will direct them onto NE 97th Avenue between E Burnside and NE Glisan streets.

Pedestrians will be directed to continue on the I-205 Multiuse Pathway until north of NE Davis Street and onto a new sidewalk on the west side of NE 97th Avenue, between NE Davis and NE Glisan streets.

This project will construct a stormwater system and curbs and sidewalks.

See bike-inspired linocuts by Amy Erickson in the Bikeasaurus gallery

“Alpenrose Women’s Madison,” a linocut by Amy Erickson on display at Bikeasaurus.

Our friends at Bikeasaurus — the fabulous bike-inspired art, gift, and accessory store at 1337 SE MLK Jr Blvd — sent us a note about the art coming to their “mini-gallery” this month. Check out the blurb from owner Becky Morton below and stop by the shop this Friday for the opening reception…

“Not sure if you knew about it, but BIKEASAURUS has a mini gallery in our lobby and we show bike-related art by different artists every month. You should come check it out sometime if you have a few minutes. We have monthly First Friday opening receptions (always 7-10 pm with free snacks and wine.) There is an opening this Friday and I’m really excited about the art, which will be linocuts by local artist Amy Erickson. I attached a photo of one of her prints I thought you might enjoy! The title is “Alpenrose Women’s Madison.””

ODOT ready to install 29 new bikeway signs near I-5 bridge

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Mock-up of one of 29 new signs
created by ODOT to guide
bike traffic near I-5 bridge.

Last week we reported on unauthorized signage near the I-5 Bridge that was installed by a citizen activist to help bike traffic navigate the winding paths to Vancouver. The person who painted the stencils and posted laminated maps still hasn’t come forward to take credit, but many in the community are hailing them as a hero. The serpentine approach to the I-5 bridge has been a thorn in the side of many people for many years.

We followed up that story with word from the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) that — despite sympathies for frustrated bike riders — they planned to remove the signs eventually because they were non-standard and hadn’t gone through an officially sanctioned process.

And then late Friday afternoon I got a phone call from ODOT Region 1 Manager Jason Tell with some very good news.

The Monday Roundup

Bend Cyclocross weekend 2-39

Happy Halloween!

Here’s the news that caught our eyes this past week…

– The City Council in Toronto continues to remove bicycle lanes even though the lanes have no apparent adverse impact on auto traffic.

– Elsewhere in Toronto, a journalist who recently scolded people on bikes for their bad behavior agreed to go on a bike ride with the Director of the Toronto Cyclists Union. The ride through downtown gave him a better appreciation for the challenges faced by people on bikes, and it also helped him realize that riding a bike is fun and exhilarating.
