Freight, active transportation advocates look to flex Metro funds in their favor

Next week, Metro’s 17-member Joint Policy Advisory Committee on Transportation (JPACT) will vote on a policy direction that will guide them in handing out $20-24 million in federal transportation funds. With scarce transportation dollars at stake these days, freight and active transportation advocates are dueling to get their projects a larger piece of the pie.

This funding pot, known as “Regional Flexible Funds” have been extremely important for non-motorized transportation projects in recent years. Last year, Metro allocated a record amount of this money — around $10 million — to biking and walking projects while freight projects didn’t receive a dime. According to Gerik Kransky of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, in the last two funding cycles, active transportation and complete streets projects have received an average of $19.9 million from this process.

Signs of the Tour de France

We’re just a few days away from the start of the 2010 Tour de France and signs of the race have already popped up in downtown Portland.

The window of Bike Gallery’s store on SW 10th and Salmon features some cool drawings of Tour de France legends. The art was created by Bike Gallery’s on-staff artist Matt Cardinal (who also happens to be co-owner of of local custom bike brand Signal Cycles). I think I know all but one of them. Can you name them all?

Event Name: Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge
Event Dates: July 16, 17, 18, 2010
Location: Alpenrose Velodrome, 6149 SW. Shattuck
Event Web Site: www.alpenrosechallenge.com

Portland, OR – The 11th Annual Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge will feature elite riders, national and international champions and future world-class Olympians delivering some of the best cycling action in the United States while competing for track records and cash prizes.

The Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge is unique for its caliber of competitors, venue, and challenging course. The event will draw more than 100 elite women, men and masters 40+ competing for over $13,000 in prizes, making it one of the richest purse track races in the country. This year’s line-up includes two-time U.S. Olympian Jame Carney, and Travis Smith Canadian Olympic hopeful and currently the world’s number one ranked sprinter. The women’s field includes multi-time national champions Cari Higgins and Canadian world’s team member Monique Sullivan.

The Alpenrose Velodrome is one of only 20 bicycle racing tracks in the nation. With corners positioned at a 44-degree angle, racers must maintain a constant speed of 12.5 miles per hour in order to remain upright on the track, which won’t be a problem as these athletes will reach speeds up to 40mph. In addition to being one of the steepest banks in the nation, the track is also unique in that it is made of concrete; most others are wooden.

The Alpenrose Velodrome Challenge takes place on July 16, 17 & 18—this free three-day event will thrill spectators with the raw athleticism. On Friday evening, Papa Murphy’s Pizza will be giving away free pizza to the first 250 attendees.

The Alpenrose Velodrome is located on SW Shattuck Road, off Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway. For more information, visit: www.alpenrosechallenge.com.
