The Portland-based Willamette Pedestrian Coalition has hired Lynn Lindgren-Schreuder as its first Executive Director. According to a press release issued by the WPC, the new hire, "marks a milestone" for the formerly all-volunteer organization.

The WPC was founded 16 years ago and works to advocate for pedestrians and ensure the development of safe and walkable neighborhoods.

With a new Executive Director, the WPC says they, "aim to do for walking what the Bicycle Transportation Alliance has done for biking: make pedestrian friendly development and transportation corridors key benchmarks for sustainable urban living."

To help meet their goals, Lindgren-Schreuder and the WPC Board have launched a "Walk 2008" campaign, which includes the following objectives:

  • Conduct over 40 Pedestrian Legal Clinics, Safety Seminars, and Advocacy Trainings to increase pedestrian and driver awareness
  • Craft new legislation for the 2009 session that will protect pedestrians
  • Encourage over 1000 people to engage in a "Walk Challenge," which will encourage people to walk for short everyday trips

Lindgren-Schreuder moved to Portland in 2001 and has also lived in Prague and the Netherlands.

Glad to see this. Pedestrians are the ultimate form of alternative transportation and could use some representation.

First order I would like looked into is a tax rebate for people who walk to work like the one proposed for cyclists.

It's about damn time somebody steps up to end the tyranny of "two-wheeled bandits". Only lazy people ride vehicles that allow you to coast for 50 feet at a time with no physical effort. Stop contributing to the madness of Peak Lycra and walk!

I am waiting for that new 'breathing' advocacy position to open up. God I love milking the non-profit teat!

Only thing better is a cushy gubmint job.
