Police, victim on lookout for road rage attacker

Yesterday afternoon, while riding their bike in Northwest Portland, a man was threatened with a baseball bat and punched in the face in front of shocked onlookers by an unidentified man driving a royal-blue Hummer H2.
The victim has now posted to Craigslist in an effort to find the attacker and bring him to justice. Here’s a snip from that post:

Citation decisions released in Sparling, Jarolimek fatalities
The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) has made its decision on whether or not to issue traffic citations in the October fatalities of Tracey Sparling and Brett Jarolimek.
Rinker Cement Company truck driver Timothy Wiles has been issued a citation for violation of ORS 811.050, “Failure to yield to rider on bicycle lane,” in the October 11th crash that took the life of Tracey Sparling.

Portland City Council hopeful and daily bike commuter Jim Middaugh just turned in 781, $5 contributions to the City Auditor’s office.
Middaugh, who announced his run for Commissioner Erik Sten’s seat just last Monday showed up at City Hall today with long time friend Bo Grayzel. Middaugh told me he was “surprised and amazed” at how quickly his network of supporters have coalesced, enabling him to gather contributions at a rapid pace.

A Google Map of Portland bike shops
Thanks to the efforts of Woodstock resident and reader Brad R., my list of Portland bike shops has been made into a handy Google Map.
Brad plotted out all the shops on my links page, and filled in the description with the little blurb I’d written for each of them.

100 years ago: “Wheelmen very near to the hearts of police”
Eric Lundgren is a local historian currently researching a book on Portland’s bike history.
As part of that research, he has found an interesting article published by the Oregonian in 1897. The article (pasted below) shows that the sometimes rocky relationship between the police and “wheelmen” is nothing new.
