This September, Portlanders will have an opportunity to learn more about our city’s commitment to livability on the Bike to the Future ride.
Created as a fund raiser for the non-profit Coalition for a Livable Future, the ride will take participants to interactive destinations to learn about issues like affordable housing, green building, community gardens, urban ecology, local food, and alternative transportation.
The 28 mile route starts at Sunnyside Environmental School in southeast Portland and has three planned stops.
Riders will learn about the vision for the new North Portland Greenway Trail at a stop at Cathedral Park, then they’ll learn about affordable housing and neighborhood planning at New Columbia, and the ride will finish up with an exploration of wetland restoration projects along the Columbia Slough with presentations by members of the Columbia Slough Watershed Council.

er, the livabilityride webpage seems to have everything but the DATE of the ride, at least when I checked this morning. Did I miss it or has the date not been determined?
The date is September 16th.
We\’re very excited about this new ride! It\’s about more than just riding, it\’s a change to explore. Bike, rest explore, then bike some more. What better way to tour Portland than by bike?
This year we\’re visiting locations in north and northeast Portland. We hope to highlight a different area of town every year.

We\’ve got a great route planned, but it hasn\’t yet been put into a form that we can feature on the website. We start and finish at Sunnyside Environmental School. Our route is clockwise and the NP Greenway is our first destination.
As much as possible, the route uses low-traffic streets, traversing along bike boulevards and other streets modified to provide safe access to cyclists.
So how to we get to Whitaker Ponds, across the ever-busy Columbia? Holman. If you don\’t know this gem of a street yet you will by the end of the ride. It is an excellent E-W thoroughfare north of Ainsworth.
If you don\’t like riding and traffic and you prefer neighborhood streets, we think you\’ll love this route.
I do beleive the date should be more visible on the website, as I thought it was the 15th, since registration ends on the 14th. Can we write the Webmaster of their site?
