It’s a pleasure to point out yet another bike-friendly business in Portland; Staccato Gelato on NE 28th.

Not only do they make mouth-watering gelato and fresh donuts, but have you seen their Frequent Biker Card? Or how about their cool cycling jerseys?

The other thing I love about Staccato is how they work with the community. I’ve seen their “Freezee Rider” gelato bike in action everywhere from the 8th floor of the Portland Building (at a PDOT event) to the recent “Share the Path” event on the Esplanade.

When Colleen McClenahan from local cycling club Sorella Forte (means “strong sister”) contacted Adnan Kadir from Peaks Coaching Group about putting on a women’s cycling skills clinic, Kadir didn’t know what to expect.

After twenty-five women showed up for the first one he quickly realized two things: there was a growing need in Portland (particularly among women) to learn specialized cycling skills, and, perhaps more importantly, that he was going to need some help.

This coming November, a group calling themselves the Portland Single Speed Collective (PSSC) will host the first “Official UnOfficial World Championship” event for single speed cyclocross racers.

River City Bicycles employee Dani Dance is helping to organize the event and she says, “They’ve got a mountain bike single speed championship, so why not for cyclocross?”

She and other members of the PSSC are working with Cross Crusade promoter Brad Ross to put on the event. So far, plans call for a two-day competition that will feature a unique cyclocross time-trial that will be used to determine the start order for the main race.
