Bike scenes from Alberta Street

Bike scenes from Last Thursday on Alberta

I’ve covered NE Alberta Street a lot on this site. That’s partly because it’s in my neck of the woods, but also because it’s just such an interesting street. It’s full of creative bike culture and has a vibe unlike anywhere else in the city.

Alberta Street is home to the tall-bike antics of the Clownhouse, the non-profit Community Cycling Center, and of course the Last Thursday art celebration.

Last month I went to Last Thursday and snapped a few photos. Here’s my photo essay.

I parked next to the completed Community Cycling Center mural. It is absolutely stunning and a true gem to the community. If you know any of these people, tell them how grateful we are for their hard work. Here’s a detail:

It’s always a pleasure to gawk at the interesting bikes that make their way onto the street. Check out this guy’s classy Peugeot folder:

You never know who you’ll meet. This guy was on a bike tour from British Columbia and was delighted by the bike culture and community he found here in Portland (no he’s not touring with that bike!):

Dumpster Dave is an Alberta Street regular. He’s always got a story to tell and a new bike to show off:

I didn’t meet this lady, but I loved her sense of fashion:

Bike parking is at a premium during Last Thursday…

…but if you’ve got a bike that looks like this, you can park anywhere you want (don’t ask me what it is because I have no idea):

Hope you enjoyed my little Alberta Street photo essay. I took more images that you can browse in my gallery. I hope to share more photo essays from other bikey streets around Portland in the weeks to come.

“(don’t ask me what it is because I have no idea)”

Looks like a plush recumbent to me.

I love how the first bike (blue bike) is missing a pedal.

Bike parking is really only at a premium at The Nest, aka the skank hole that everyone in the immediate neighborhood would love to see disappear. I miss Joe’s place. 🙁

Great pics! I like the guy riding the little toy bike. You could carry it on a plane, and then use it to get around any city you fly to. Beats walking!
