Mountain Cycle moving to Seattle

The final chapter in the long-running saga of Mountain Cycle has now been written.

Mountain Cycle was once a beloved local brand with a factory in North Portland, a presence on the local cyclocross scene and even a ‘cross bike named the Stumptown.

According to a press release I just received, the new owners have decided to set up their headquarters in Seattle Washington.

The press release says that under new management the brand is poised for a “new lease on life,” and that “the company plans to rebuild Mountain Cycle back into the innovative and rider oriented brand that it started out as back in 1988.”

It’s too bad because I thought they were well on their way to doing that right here in Portland.

Zoobombers plan annual birthday bash

[Ready, set, Zoobomb]

This weekend Zoobombers celebrate their fourth anniversary with two days of mini-bike madness known as the BIFFday Summer Olympics.

On Saturday they’ll assemble at Colonel Summers Park (SE 20th and Belmont) at 2:00 for events like mini-bike polo, chicken races (where mini-bikers duel with someone riding on their shoulders), and the ominous-sounding Harness of Doom.

Then at noon on Sunday, at an undisclosed location (sorry), a new event dubbed “This Race is a Pipe Bomb,” is planned. Organizers are calling the event an opportunity to ride down a sewage pipe in “pitch black, stanky darkness with the albino fishies.” and, “Race down a 6′ diameter concrete tube, carve on the walls, go as fast as you can, probably get hurt!” Sounds awesome.

This event will be followed by a high-stakes Zoobomb and more craziness on the hill.

Event planned in response to fatal crash

Citizen activists mobilzed by the death of cyclist Mike Wilberding on August 1st have channeled their emotions into a traffic safety awareness action. The event will be held on September 1st from 4-6pm at SW 5th and Washington Streets in Beaverton (the intersection where the crash occured).

The circumstances surrounding Wilberding’s death spurred a large amount of community response, including the formation of a web-based traffic safety activism group.

from Portland Adventist Hospital 10123 SE Market St Portland, OR. Was locked with a cable and Master padlock to sign next to full bike rack at front entrance of hospital. Lock shackle was cut. Lock, cut shackle and cable were left on ground.
