4/25: Hello readers and friends. I'm still recovering from a surgery I had on 4/11, so I'm unable to attend events and do typical coverage. See this post for the latest update. I'll work as I can and I'm improving every day! Thanks for all your support 🙏. - Jonathan Maus, BikePortland Publisher and Editor

Two devious bike theft tricks you should be aware of

bike theft

Bike thieves are a clever bunch.
(Photo © J. Maus/BikePortland)

The world of bike theft continues to both fascinate and deplore us. It seems like just as innovation and technology promises better bike theft prevention and recovery tools, thieves are becoming more brazen, devious, and numerous.

In our ongoing quest to arm you with as much knowledge about bike theft as possible, we wanted to share the experiences of two readers. Both of these bike theft tactics where new to me, so I figured they were worth passing along.

The first is from a reader named Chris:

I used to have a roommate that was a complete moron and “accidentally” stole a bike:

He was in Eugene, OR and some guy on the sidewalk asked, as he was walking by, if he wanted to buy this Gary Fisher MTB for $40. He gave the guy $40, and the guy was gone before he realized that the bike was still locked to a bike rack. So, he went home to get some bolt cutters and returned to remove the lock and take his new bike home. It wasn’t until he got home that he had to be told by friends and family that he was swindled and just stole someones bike… I didn’t know him when he did this, but he still held onto a lot of guilt from this experience… doesn’t make him any less of an idiot, though.

PBOT zeroes in on ‘ConnectOregon’ project list

This proposed path in South Waterfront
could finally get funded.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation is zeroing in on a list of projects they hope to get funded with a special pot of state Lottery-backed funds and it looks like bike share might be in the running.

Thanks to a change in the law this past legislative session, bicycling (and walking) projects are now eligible for funding through the Oregon Department of Transportation’s ConnectOregon program. Prior to this coming round of funding, the ConnectOregon program was open only to air, marine, rail, and public transit projects.

But this time around, due to the work of advocates and a concerted push by the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, bicycling and walking projects can finally compete for a piece of this $42 million pie.

Two Portland bike shops close their doors for good

Sign on an empty Cascade Cycling.

By the end of this month, Portland’s long list of bike shops will be a little shorter. Cascade Cycling in north Portland has already closed its doors and the Bicycle Repair Collective in southeast plans to be closed by the end of this month. Both of these were relatively small, neighborhood shops that focused on commuter and utility bikes.

Cascade Cycling (122 N Killingsworth) was opened by Ben Bartlett in the summer of 2006. Ben, aged 57, lives in the neighborhood and wanted to sell bikes that he (and other folks in the over-50 set) would feel comfortable riding. The shop specialized in custom builds of sturdy commuter bikes from Norco, Pake, Soma, and other brands.
