Bike picnic goes peacefully as planned

Bike Jammin picnic

When some cyclists got wind of a Jammin 95.5 picnic event at Grant Park on Saturday many in the community urged them not to attend. There was a concern that if any cyclists showed up it would just incite the radio station’s fans and tarnish an already tense situation.

Jasun Wurster disagreed. He thought a public park was the perfect place to peacefully demonstrate the community’s concerns about the situation, so he organized a bike picnic. Wurster set up a website with information and notified the Portland Police Bureau to make sure they were well aware of the situation and his intentions (they were).

Local shop profiled in Bicycling Magazine

[Veloshop owner in Bicycling Magazine]

Molly Cameron, owner of downtown Portland’s Veloshop is profiled in the “Wrench” section of the latest issue of Bicycling Magazine.

The article (on page 43 of the September issue) focuses on Molly’s committment to making sure nothing in her store is derived from animals. That means no leather saddles and no animal-derived proteins in the energy drinks she sells.

Stolen: Trek 4300

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

My bike was stolen at about 5:30 pm on Sunday July 15th. I had a cable lock that was cleanly cut indicating bolt cutters of some kind. The guy who stole the bike looked “normal” wore shorts with tube socks pushed down, had a back pack (probably to store the cutters) with wide shoulder straps, and wore a baseball type hat with black being the primary color. My bike was stolen from NW 11th and NW Couch and was a grey Trek 4300 19.5″ 2004 model. It had hardly been used, probably ridden 7 times total.

If you could post the above notice I would appreciate it. It seems that a lot of bikes in that area have been stolen lately so maybe it will help people.

Thanks,
Dylan

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Today, July 20 from 9 AM to 1:30 PM, my 1990’ish Trek 820 Mountain Track bike was stolen in front of Legacy Emanuel Hospital, where I work. It is green and has a golden front shock, a Judy RockShox from many years ago when I endo’ed and killed the original part. It’s a 21 gear mountain bike with mostly memories for value, I just would like to see it again.

email with tips.

Plus there was a pump in the pouch and lights and a lock on the bike. I hate myself. Ugh 8-[ Please help. That bike was the world to me.

Naked St. Johns Bridge protest ride tomorrow

St. Johns Bridge, Portland OR

[We need more
than a sign.]

As part of an ongoing protest against how cyclists got shafted on the St. Johns Bridge last year, a group of “ciclonudistas” is rallying the troops for their second annual naked protest ride (here’s a report from last year).

A little background:

Last year, the Oregon Department of Transportation completed a major renovation of the St. Johns Bridge, the northernmost Willamette River crossing in the city and a key connection for thousands of North Portland residents to popular recreational bike routes and Highway 30.

Stolen: Trek 520

My Trek 520 was stolen outside the Hollywood Trader Joe’s on Tuesday, July 11th around 8pm. It’s a 2002 model- dark green with clipless pedals, a rack, pump under the top tube, silver fenders, mud flap, tool bag, odometer…the works!
It was locked to the bike rack (with a U-Lock) just outside the east entrance of the store…and I was only inside for about 10 minutes! I’m heartbroken…
Please contact me if you see this sweet bike cruising around PDX. I would appreciate any information you might have for me.

Bridge Pedal meeting results in changes

Bridge Pedal, 2005. Portland OR

[Congestion]

Looking to avoid a repeat of last year’s chaotic Bridge Pedal event, stakeholders and city agencies recently came together to discuss concerns and review the ’06 course.

Last year’s ride was unfortunately the victim of it’s own success (and maybe some poor planning). Several rest stops and other places on the route caused major bottlenecks and some grumbling from participants as well as city officials.

The craziness was due in part because there are three different routes (10, 8, and 6 bridge) and a walking event (Bridge Stride) all on the same day.
