Blazers star Brandon Roy bikes to practice (and he’s not weird)

Roy’s talent, style, and popularity could
do wonders for the reputation of
bicycling in Portland.

In the few years he’s been in the NBA, the Portland Trail Blazers’ Brandon Roy has become a bona-fide star. That’s one reason why back in July 2008, we featured his love of biking on the Front Page.

Now comes further proof of how lucky Portland is to have “B-Roy” on our team: According to an interview given by teammate Nic Batum to a French media outlet that was translated by fan site Blazers Edge, Roy not only loves to ride for training purposes, but he’s actually riding to practice as well.

Here’s the key quote from the interview (this is Batum speaking about Roy):

“Whereas, bicycle messengers provide a value-added service that businesses seek out as a means to reduce costs and improve efficiency, crucial to the movement of important information…”
— Mayor Sam Adams, in a proclamation of 10-9 Day

Professional bike messengers around the country will recognize today as 10-9 Day, a.k.a. Messenger Appreciation Day.

October 9th has been a day of thanks for bike messengers since 1997, when Toronto joined San Francisco with a joint proclamation. Since then, 10/9 has been officially recognized in Calgary, Chicago, Edmonton, Montreal, Houston, Vancouver and Washington DC.

Now you can add Portland to that list.

‘Cross Clash’ will stoke Oregon-Washington racing rivalry

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Sasquatch vs. Unicorn: Guess
which is which.

This weekend the Cross Clash race series aims to boost a good-natured racing rivalry between Washington and Oregon. The rivalry has existed for years, but Cross Clash organizers say this will be the first time it will be settled by a cumulative tally of racers from each state.

The first event happens Saturday at Fort Steilacoom Park in Lakewood, WA. Race number two is on Sunday at the Cross Crusade event taking place at Rainier High School (about 50 miles north of Portland).

Clash promoter Zac Daab says the rivalry is a longstanding tradition. “As Portland and Seattle have two hot beds of cycling so close to one another, we wanted to go head to head, score the event on a state vs. state basis, and have a winning state at the end.”

BTA reports net loss of $92,509 for 2008

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance, Oregon’s largest nonprofit bicycle advocacy and education organization, has been undergoing substantial internal changes in the past year and a half.

These changes were thrown into stark relief with the release of the organization’s Annual Report for the fiscal year of January 1 through December 31, 2008. The report — scheduled to be released to the public by the end of this week — states a loss for the year of $92,509. In a letter published in the report, Executive Director Scott Bricker notes that the loss is due to “inadequate accounting systems and oversight.”

The BTA’s total revenue for the year was $1,376,577. This number is up from $1,102,734 the year before, and has nearly tripled since 2004. The organization currently has 18 full time employees.

Bike Tour map.
(Larger version below)

Portland’s bike network is one of the finest in the country. As such, our city regularly plays host to urban planners, engineers, and other wonky folks who want to learn and understand, first-hand, how our bike facilities look and feel.

Usually, these visitors are given a guided tour by a City of Portland employee or by one of our resident bike experts. But now, with the launch of a Virtual Bike Tour, the Institute of Bicycle and Pedestrian Innovation at Portland State University has made it easy for anyone to take an educational tour of Portland’s bikey highlights.
