More details on tonight’s Rooftop Ride

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

There’s an interesting ride tonight called the “Rooftop Ride.” Below is a message from the organizer that explains a bit more about what to expect:

there have been questions about the rooftop ride, so here’s the plan:

– we ride at 11 from in front of the nines hotel, 525 SW Morrison (near pioneer square on the max line).

– you can meet just before 11 outside or come earlier and enjoy the views from “departure,” which is the nines’ rooftop bar (i went up there for the first time yesterday and bought nothing and still was welcomed to walk around, see the views, feel really out of my element, etc.)

– i’ll be out in front of the nines from 10:30 – 11 to meet and greet and gather the group. we should be obvious.

– don’t ride a tallbike unless you wanna walk! a thousand apologies to my freak bike friends, but you will be walking your bike if you cannot ride under a 7 foot clearance!

– we will be riding to three different rooftop spots. the first two are 5-minute stops, the final one is where we can hang out for a while.

– byob. i suggest warm or warming liquids.

– the final rooftop destination does have shelter available! in case you were waffling about the prospect of being hundreds of feet up in this nastiness… but it’s gonna clear up. it’s gonna clear up. it’s gonna clear up. because god loves bikes.

hope to see everyone at 11!

Ride Report: Pedalpalooza Preview Ride

Ride Report
the second annual pedalpalooza preview ride went off without a hitch and with twice as many participants as last year! micah, jim, deacon amos, timo, esther, stephen upchurch, shads, and fool took to the happy streets on a lovely evening and stole all of your awesome ride ideas, boiled em down, mashed em up, and had a lot of fun! we meandered down the waterfront, past omsi, through donut shops and coffee houses, SE and NE, and ended up at moloko plus just as it started raining.

this year we previewed *over 60* rides–a small increase from last year’s 54, but only because we stopped counting at 61! and nobody even got naked (this was actually a little disappointing, and fool takes all the blame for not leading the strip down.) best dressed were fool: special tights, shoes, pretty panties, a kilt, and a microcosm publishing tshirt and shads: silver sparkly dancing boots, gay pride socks, sock dreams leggings, pajamas, and a superhero t-shirt. fool and shads changed outfits several times to up the rides-previewed count: a vaquero hat, a mortarboard, a toga, and a bathrobe.

good times were had by all, and we left ourselves some room to grow next year =)

As Vancouver residents and advocates work to save that city’s Bike Program from the budget chopping block, The Columbian newspaper says now’s just not a good time to ask.

In an “In our view” op-ed published yesterday, The Columbian pointed out that Vancouver is already a bike-friendly city, but “not as bike-friendly as many bicyclists would like.” They lauded recent activism at City Council and acknowledged that “funding for bicycle and pedestrian improvements in Vancouver remains scarce and in most cases scattered among piecemeal expenditures,” but, they added:

BikePortland Mailbag: A strap for walk-a-biking

A new way to walk.
-Video below-

I get a lot of interesting things sent to me in the mail, so I’ve been thinking about doing a ‘Mailbag’ column for a long time. Here’s the first installment.

A company from Naples, Florida emailed about a new product called “Walk A Bike: The Bicycle Wrist Steering Strap.” Check out the graphic at right and then read the description below:

“This new product positions the walker a safe distance to the rear of the bicycle making it easy to walk or jog long distances with the bicycle at his/her side without tripping on the pedal. When you reach your maximum walking/jogging distance, just bicycle back. Adding bicycling to your walking fitness program provides a more diverse exercising routine.”

Guest Article: Another big idea: Make driving less convenient

[The following article was written by new executive director of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance, Rob Sadowsky.]

Another big idea

“To make a significant dent in bicycling mode share in Portland…we need to take significant steps to limiting the convenience of driving a car.”

I was excited to read the various ‘Big Ideas’ submitted to BikePortland, even my favorite — the giant slide down Mt. Hood. To make a significant dent in bicycling mode share in Portland, and in the region, we need not only big bold infrastructure ideas, but we need to take significant steps to limiting the convenience of driving a car.

World Naked Bike Ride needs volunteers

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

This just in, from WNBR crew:

Here is an update of what we need in terms of personhood to make WNBR happen. We’ve had a lot of response, for which we are grateful, but a little extra push is needed to ensure that this event can happen. PLEASE help our fair city get naked, and on bikes.

And why do it alone? Bring a friend! Have a ball! Make instant friends and charm the pants off of them! More the merrier, so if there’s a shift you’re eying and a friend you want to share it with, fear not the numero uno! Two is better than one (usually).

Kindly email volunteer@shift2bikes.org with your:

  • name
  • email
  • phone number
  • shift preference. We’ve still got about 30 volunteer shifts to fill, so don’t be shy. There’s a shift for you, all ye of Shift.

Thank you very much for considering spending some time with us and others who are willing and thrilled to go “Bare As You Dare” in the name of bike affection.

Set-Up (Help unload and set up bag check area, decorations, other equipment) – 10a-3p Saturday
3 volunteers needed. Daytime, low stress, can ride

Clean-up, night of (Pack up valuable equipment, remaining bags left at bag check) – 11p-12a Saturday
1 volunteer needed. Short shift, can ride
Clean-up, day after (Pick up containers, take down decorations, make the place prettier than it was before; seedballs optional) – 11a-2p Sunday
2 volunteers needed. Daytime, low stress, can ride

Security, day of (Make sure no one carts off with stuff. Bring a friend, read a book, have a picnic) – 3p-8p Saturday
1 volunteer needed. Extremely low stress, can ride
Security, evening of (Provide info, make sure no one is doing anything very illegal or dumb, support paid security, monitor entry/exit of meet-up location) – 8:30p-11:30p Sat.
8 volunteers needed. Most can ride, be a crucial part of making this event happen.
NOTE: If you want to be part of the WNBR but don’t necessarily want to ride, this is a shift for you! Most can ride, but we want a few hanging back just to make sure all is well.

Bag Check, pre-ride (Take bags) 9p-10p Saturday
3 volunteers needed. Can ride, short shift.
Bag Check, ride (Preside over bags during ride, be there for any riders who peel off early) – 10p-11:30p Saturday
1 volunteer needed. Super-chill shift.
NOTE: If you want to be involved with the ride but don’t necessarily want to ride yourself, this is the shift for you! Consider two bag shifts, and we’ll find you a prize for being awesome.
Bag Check, post-ride (Give bags back to the nude multitudes) – 11p-12:30a Saturday
4 volunteers needed. Can ride, short shift.

Bike Parking (Watch over bikes) – 8:30p-10p Saturday
1 volunteer needed. Can ride, get to spend some time with some great bikes.

Thanks so much, all volunteers who have pledged and those yet to come!
