Fixed gear trick riding not as new as you think

Scientific American has unearthed an amazing bit of bike history from their archives that shows the popularity of fixed-gear freestyle is nothing new.

In a blog post on Friday, the magazine shared images from an article they ran in 1899 featuring “two well-known trick riders,” N.C. Kaufman of Rochester, NY and Lee Richardson of Milwaukee, WI. As I looked at the images, I was struck by how similar Mr. Kaufman’s moves were to what I’ve seen by some of our local trick riders.

The new pump track at Ventura Park in East Portland is well on its way to being completed and we’ve got video proof of how awesome it is.

Since volunteers began slinging shovels and dirt last month, the track has taken shape nicely. The Northwest Trail Alliance is managing the build operation, under an official partnership with Portland Parks & Recreation.

Here’s the news that caught our eyes this past week…

– A three-day outage of Blackberry phone service resulted in a big decrease in traffic crashes in the Middle East – 20% in Dubai and 40% in Abu Dhabi.

– In Seattle, a fatal hit-and-run back in July is being called just another “tragic accident”. KIRO-TV reports that the teenage driver involved in the collision will get a $42 fine for “unsafe lane change.”

– Concern from bicycling advocates has continued after California’s Governor Jerry Brown vetoed a safe passing law last week. Some are calling for Governor Brown to meet with people who ride bicycles in L.A. and better explain his reasoning for vetoing the bill.
