Dave Weber’s 40-plus mile, award-winning daily commute
Dallas to Kansas City.
You could ride from Portland, Oregon to Los Angeles, California but you still wouldn’t travel as many miles as Dave Weber rode his bike in September. Even adding a detour along Highway 101 from Sacramento to Bakersfield would give you fewer than the 1,096 miles Weber rode on his way to and from work last month.
Weber was the recipient of the Brian Reynolds Distance Award, given each year to the rider with the most miles logged in the Bicycle Transportation Alliance’s Bike Commute Challenge.
How exactly did he ride 1,096 miles in one month, just on his way to and from work? Here’s a clue…

PBOT staffer off to Europe to study ‘livable’, residential streets
As a transportation planner at the Bureau of Transportation (PBOT), Denver Igarta has had a front-row seat to the development of Portland’s burgeoning network of low-stress, “neighborhood greenway” streets. Now Igarta will head to Europe to “uncover the secrets of residential streets that were built to first serve people rather than cars.”
Igarta has been selected as an Urban and Regional Policy Fellow by the German Marshall Fund. His research will include a one-month, four city tour with stops in Munich, Germany; Rotterdam, Netherlands; Copenhagen, Denmark; and Malmö, Sweden.
T4 America to hold rally at Sellwood Bridge
The national transportation advocacy group, Transportation for America will hold a rally at the Sellwood Bridge this Wednesday.
See the media advisory below….
CONTACT:
Chris Rall, 971-230-4745
chris.rall@t4america.orgMedia Advisory:
Rally for Jobs and Infrastructure Repair at Sellwood BridgeWHAT: Labor and consumer rights leaders will speak about the need to put people to work repairing America’s 70,000 structurally deficient bridges. They’ll discuss the need to keep our transportation infrastructure functioning properly so we stay economically competitive. The Sellwood Bridge is the backdrop for this stand-up media event on Wednesday, October 19 at 11:00 am. The event will include a tour of some of the bridge’s structurally deficient features.
A report ranking Portland’s bridges against the rest of the nation’s metropolitan regions will be released the same day. An embargoed copy of the report is available upon request.
WHY: President Obama’s recent speech at the Brent Spence Bridge in Ohio, and the shutdown of the structurally deficient Sherman Minton Bridge in Louisville, Kentucky put bridge repair in the national news spotlight. The structurally deficient Sellwood Bridge, which awaits federal funding to cover the remaining 8% of its replacement cost, brings this issue home to Portland.
VISUALS: Structural deficiencies of the Sellwood Bridge include leaning columns, steel plates bolted in place to reinforce weakened cracking beams, railing columns wrapped with cellophane to prevent falling debris, and a landslide affecting the bridge’s footings. There will also be hardhat-wearing union construction workers attending the stand-up speaking event.
WHEN: 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19.
WHO: John Mohlis – Executive Secretary, Oregon Building and Construction Trades Council
Dave Rosenfeld – Executive Director, OSPIRGWHERE: West end of the Sellwood Bridge.
Park in the Staff Jennings upper parking lot just north of the west end of the bridge on the east side of Macadam Ave. / Hwy 43. Then walk down the driveway. The event will take place under the bridge.
Metro launches survey to find out how you get around (without a car)
Metro has launched a survey to learn more about how Portlanders get around without a car.
The survey is part of a multi-year effort to create a Regional Active Transportation Plan (ATP), a first for Metro. The survey went out to the nearly 6,500 people who have signed up for Metro’s Opt In Panel.
The manager of Metro’s active transportation efforts, Lake McTighe, says the survey is the first step in “gaining some background that will help inform the planning process.” McTighe acknowledges the limitations of the Opt In panel (whose members are mostly white and from Multnomah County) and says the data will be just one source among many.
