With Freak Bike Fall kicking off tonight I thought it’d be fun to take a look at a creation from one of Portland’s most talented freak bike builders.

30-year-old Jake Ryder (a.k.a. “J-Ryde”) has only lived in Portland for two years, but he used to visit so often while living in Seattle that it seems like he’s lived here longer. He’s also tends to make quite an impression.

Ryder is a talented maker of many things. He designs and builds everything from event posters to furniture (which is how he pays the bills) — and of course freak bikes.

Oregonian’s “Hard Drive” blog.

A new blog post by Joseph Rose, the commuting columnist for The Oregonian, takes a look at one of the most unpopular aspects of bicycling behavior: red light running. In, Portland bicyclists who run red lights: Is it worth it? Rose asks, “Is it really worth blowing through a red light on your bicycle on the streets of Portland?… Does it really cut much time off your commute?”

Rose also took the opportunity to include a helmet-cam video of a man running several red lights on N. Williams Avenue…

People on Bikes - Waterfront-4-3

BTA wants to have a clear
answer when it comes to the
inevitable helmet debate.

The Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) has launched a survey of their members to get feedback on one of bicycling’s biggest debates: helmet use.

Here’s a blurb from an email sent to members about the survey:

“The board of directors of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance will be discussing the role of helmets and the organization’s policy in the broader context of our work to make bicycling safe and accessible. To help inform the board’s discussion, we are asking our members to respond..”

Curious about why the BTA is wading in these waters, I contacted executive director Rob Sadowsky to learn more.

Portland, bikes and the ‘Plenitude Economy’

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

The ‘Plenitude Economy’ concept looks
a lot like Portland.

With the Occupy Wall Street movement continuing to spur discussions across America about a fundamental shift in how we approach our lives and our economy, now seems like a good time to propose a different path.

For many people in Portland, what could be considered a different path to the majority of America has been the reality here for years now.

Today I was forwarded a video about the “Plenitude Economy.” The idea is being promoted by the Center for the New American Dream. If you have 5 minutes, it’s worth watching. After a quick summary of how we got into our current mess, a cool animation explains how we might move forward differently.

Detail of flyer for upcoming training event.

Sandy, Estacada, Molalla, West Linn and Wilsonville are among the cities in Clackamas County lining up to learn more about how to position themselves as bicycle touring destinations.

Travel Oregon, an organization that promotes tourism statewide, is co-hosting a ‘Bicycle Tourism Studio’ event on November 8th along with Clackamas County Tourism and Cultural Affairs. The Bicycle Tourism Studio concept is part of Travel Oregon’s focus on tourism development in rural communities. Funded by our state’s 1 percent lodging tax, the initiative aims to train local agencies, governments, and organizations to capitalize on sustainable tourism.

Kristin Dahl is Travel Oregon’s Sustainable Tourism Development Manager. She says Clackamas County has a big advantage over other counties when it comes to bike tourism. “They’ve got public transportation connections to Portland like the MAX line and the Springwater Corridor.”
