🚨

6/20: Hello readers and friends. I am having my second (of two) total knee replacement surgeries today so I'll be out of commission for a bit while I recover. Please be patient while I get back to full health. I hope to be back to posting as soon as I can. I look forward to getting back out there. 🙏. - Jonathan Maus, BikePortland Publisher and Editor

Powell butte no bike signs

I’ve noticed two trails up on powell butte have been closed to bikes. One trail has been closed to bikes for about 30 days. I just saw another trail close last night. Does anyone know if any other trails will be closed also. The trails aren’t closed to anyone else.

Thanks for reading.

Those trails have actually been closed to bikes since the trail redesign was implemented (last year?) and were part of the redesign from the beginning. However the signage has lagged significantly behind the dirt work (obviously). So while it appears that the trail closure happened overnight, it was always part of the Powell Butte trail plan and the communication has lagged far behind all the other implementation.

(I only know this because it’s been presented at the Off-Road Master Plan Committee meetings the past few months, so please don’t shoot the messenger).

I have difficulty understanding what is open/closed, so I just ride respectfully on all the trails I ride there. I have had nothing but positive experiences when encountering other trail users. Super friendly vibe up there.
