Was a busy Friday night with really good weather during prime dinner time (happened between 7 and 10:30 pm)…people were eating at outdoor tables at Grassa and Lardo close to the bike. High traffic area. Very odd. Was locked to a “5 minute” parking sign with a Kryptonite U-lock. They ripped off the two signs and the top of the pole and lifted the bike all the way over.

In Portland, there’s a local bike race every night of the week

Portland’s national reputation for cycling has more to do with commuting than any other type of riding (with naked riding a close second).

But what many people don’t fully appreciate is the local racing scene. With the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association (OBRA) providing a dedicated and competent backbone, Portland is full of race promoters and volunteers who put on a variety of excellent events. Add in a local business community eager to sponsor and support them and you’ve got the makings of a healthy racing scene.

In fact, starting this week, it’s possible to join an organized race event within a few miles of downtown Portland Monday through Friday. And on some nights there’s more than one option!

Portland Mayor Charlie Hales says a planned City Council vote on a street fee, originally scheduled for tomorrow, will be pushed back to November. In a statement released a few minutes ago, Hales said the vote is “temporarily delayed due to concerns voiced by small business owners and low-income people and advocates.”

A series of complaints about illegal and annoying activity on a narrow 350-foot path near the Willow Creek MAX stop has TriMet considering closing the route to the public.

The link runs from the Beaverton MAX platform to West Baseline Road, between a residential subdivision and a KinderCare day care center. It’s one of the few bike and pedestrian links across the MAX tracks in the area; the shortest detour would lengthen any trips that now use the path by up to two-tenths of a mile, or about four minutes on foot.

“There’s been some drug use and some vandalism along there,” TriMet spokeswoman Roberta Altstadt said Monday. “There can be people yelling. … People just don’t feel that it’s the safest path.”

Two weeks ago, we invited Portlanders of every stripe to share ideas on how Portland can regain its sense of direction and keep using biking to improve our city. This first post is by Jason Miner and Craig Beebe, the director and communications director of 1000 Friends of Oregon.

The first transportation revolution in Portland has been so dramatic and successful in part because bicycling has more than a token seat at the table. Bicycling infrastructure, safety and access has become a central part of the conversation about the city’s mobility and economic development. That was evident when the City Club overwhelmingly adopted a report last year endorsing the integral role of bicycles in the city’s transportation system, but it’s been the case for a lot longer.

Expect traffic impacts on SW Barbur as ODOT begins bridge rehab project

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) began construction today on a project that will rehabilitate two bridges on SW Barbur Blvd — a key bicycle route that offers people a straight and relatively flat connection from southwest to downtown Portland. Lane closures began this morning and the work is expected to last five months.

This is the same project that spurred a grassroots movement for improved bicycle access on Barbur back in January 2013. Despite Barbur’s abysmal safety record and a strong case made for putting the major road on a “diet,” ODOT and Portland Transportation Commissioner Steve Novick have been reluctant to move the idea forward.

On the brighter side, as we reported back in March, Novick has directed PBOT to work with ODOT on a traffic study during this construction closure. Their aim will be to observe how traffic responds and then determine the impact of a potential, future, and permanent lane reconfiguration.

Last week the Oregon Senate confirmed two new members to the Oregon Transportation Commission (OTC): Catherine Mater, a civil engineer and business owner from Corvallis; and Alando Simpson, owner of City of Roses Disposal & Recycling in Portland. Simpson is also the first African-American on the commission since it was formed in 1913.
