State Rep secures $3.6 million in state funding for East Portland sidewalks

State Representative Shemia Fagan has delivered $3.6 million in state capital funds to build sidewalks and crosswalks in East Portland.

At a press conference back in April, Rep. Fagan announced her intentions to pursue this funding, which she saw as her duty following the tragic death of five-year-old Morgan Maynard-Cook on February 28th. Not only did Rep. Fagan believe the state had a duty to build the sidewalks in light of the grief experienced by Maynard-Cook’s mother Connie Ruiz, she also did it to provide safer road conditions for the 2,000 students who attend schools in the area.

“All of these kids need a safe route to school,” she said at that press conference, “And these families are not just Portlanders, they are Oregonians and we owe them as well.”

Position Summary: The Leather Craftsperson is responsible for hand-crafting leather into various products under the instruction of a master craftsman. This is a unique opportunity for a craftsperson to apprentice under a supportive mentor.

Requirements:
• An artist’s discerning eye for quality and detail
• Reliable, punctual, and self-motivated worker with a strong work ethic
• Comfortable using X-acto blades
• 20/20 Vision (with corrective lenses acceptable)
• Must have physical strength and stamina: standing and sitting for 8 hours a day and able to lift 50 lb
• Experience with woodcraft or model-building a plus
• Experience hand-sewing a plus
• Experience and/or enthusiasm for bicycling a plus
• Experience in customer service or an office environment a plus

Primary Duties:
• Craft/make leather products
• Use of various hand tools and power tools
• Occasional office support when necessary

Compensation
• Sick leave
• Reasonably flexible scheduling, with additional hours during seasonal rushes
• Starting pay $11.00 per hour, 20-30 hours/week
• Opportunity for additional benefits after 6 months review

Biking/walking projects now eligible for $42 million in state lottery funds

For the first time ever, with the passage a few minutes ago of Senate Bill 260, the Oregon Legislature has agreed to open up the state’s lottery-backed Multimodal Transportation Fund (a.k.a. ConnectOregon) to biking and walking projects. Even though it’s always been referred to as multimodal, the ConnectOregon program has funded only air, marine, rail, and public transit infrastructure improvements — everything but bicycling and walking.

Sellwood Bridge project detour routes riders onto SW Macadam sidewalk

but it comes with a detour off the Westside Trail.

Multnomah County has announced a major detour that will impact people who ride bicycles between downtown Portland and the Sellwood Bridge on the west side of the Willamette River.

As part of the Sellwood Bridge project a County contractor is replacing the culvert that crosses Stephens Creek under the trolley tracks between SW Miles Street/SW Taylors Ferry Road. Crews have put a detour in place (see graphic below) that will impact users of the Westside Trail until at least early 2014.
