On local backroads, getting lost is part of the fun

Semi-organized, unsanctioned rides on a mix of gravel and paved roads are increasingly popular these days. There were three in the Portland area last weekend alone. One of the reasons people love these rides is the sense of adventure they afford. There are no markings or course officials. Riders are on their own except for the friends they bring or make. BikePortland contributor Judd Eustice tackled the Scappoose Soul Slaughterer yesterday and ended up getting lost. In the process, he had more fun than he ever expected. When he got home (after a shower and some food of course) he typed up a stream-of-consciousness recap in an email to me. He planned to clean it up before I posted it; but I thought it was fun to read in its original form. Hope you do too. — Jonathan

It was a bit of a mess from the start.

Trike-share!
(Photo: B-cycle)

Lots of fun stories, news, and other stuff to share from last week, so let’s get started…

— It is truly exciting to watch the launch of CitiBike bike-share in New York City. According to Streetsblog, over 4,000 people signed up for a membership in the first 24 hours.

— Almost as cool as the launch of CitiBike was news from Madison, Wisconsin that B-cycle has introduced a trike into their bike-share fleet.

— In other news about pedal powered vehicles with more than two wheels, a judge in Ohio ruled in favor of a man who rides a quadricycle on city streets and they redefined the state’s definition of “bicycle” in doing so.

Recap and photos of De Ronde PDX

2013 De Ronde -1

The start of De Ronde, a group ride that attracted
hundreds of riders on Saturday.
(Photo © J. Maus/BikePortland)

Saturday was another great edition of the infamous and unofficial classic Ronde PDX ride. Hundreds of people showed up to push the limits of their legs over 47 miles and nearly 8,000 feet of climbing. We climbed up and down and up and down countless hills between NW Saltzman Road and Council Crest Park. With nothing but yellow stencils of the Lion of Flanders painted on the road to guide us, we pedaled through potholes, gravel, smooth pavement, and even some singletrack.
