An apology and other thoughts on that story
I’m not even sure where to begin about what happened yesterday.
First, I want to say that I am deeply sorry for jumping the gun and choosing to publish that story prematurely. The impact of my actions have proven to be far greater than anything I intended. I got caught up in the story. As I was working on it I thought I was doing the right thing. But now it’s obvious that I wasn’t. I messed up and my mistake hurt the people involved and it has caused a lot of concern and anger from many people in the community.

Esplanade near OMSI to close for 14 months beginning May 1st
TriMet has announced that the Eastbank Esplanade bicycling and walking path just south of OMSI to SE Caruthers Street will be closed for 14 months. The closure is due to construction of the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail bridge. Here’s more from TriMet:
Two contractors, Kiewit and Stacy Witbeck, will be working in the closure area to move and rebuild a portion of the Eastside Greenway Trail, build walls and construct the landside piers and abutment for the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail transit bridge.
During the trail closure, pedestrians and cyclists will be detoured to SE Water Avenue which has new sidewalks and bike lanes and connects directly to SE 4th Avenue and the Springwater Corridor Trail.

Hawthorne Bridge bike counter has logged over 1,000,000 trips since August
Yesterday at about 4:00 pm the bicycle counter on the Hawthorne Bridge logged its 1,000,000th trip.
The counter went live on August 8th and reached 500,000 trips just three months later. Yesterday was a fitting day to break the 1 million mark as the daily total was 6,214 — the largest amount of trips since way back in October (the huge spike threw off my projections and I arrived at the bridge 629 trips too late to see number 1 million).
This $20,000 counter (which despite what you might have read was donated to PBOT) stands as an important reminder of the impact bicycling has on Portland. For the past eight months, the Hawthorne Bridge alone carried an average of 4,973 bicycle trips in and out of downtown. That’s about 2,500 vehicles entering downtown that don’t take up parking spaces, or add to the daily gridlock, or spew toxic fumes into the air, or create dangerous public spaces.
