Editorial: Portland’s golden opportunity to invest in downtown bike access

The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is prepping a $10.2 million list of active transportation projects they hope to get funded through a federal grant. According to sources at PBOT, conversations have already begun to focus all that money on a package of projects that would focus specifically on downtown bike access in the form of protected bike lanes and cycle tracks.

This is a golden opportunity we should not pass up.

The money is available through a pot of federal money doled out by Metro Council known as regional flexible funds. The amount of funding that will come to the City of Portland (for the 2016-18 cycle) is $14 million. As per a resolution passed by the Joint Policy Advisory Committee on Transportation in 2010, $10.2 million (or 75%) of that total must be spent on active transportation projects (the remaining $3.7 million will go to freight projects).

2013 is shaping up to be the year of transportation funding. For years now, everyone has known way we fund transportation is broken, but no one ever wanted to talk about it. Now, so many threads of the funding discussion are coming together that it’s not a stretch to think that by the end of this year we’ll have some major breakthroughs.

While ODOT continues to lead the nation in a push toward a mileage-based tax (instead of the gas tax), the City of Portland is doing some pushing of its own. Case in point is the City’s 2013 State Legislative Agenda that was released today. The agenda is a 48-page document — signed by Mayor Charlie Hales — that outlines the specific policy issues the City’s government relations staffers will lobby for down in Salem. Among the top priorities this year is infrastructure spending.

Dan Kaufman of CrankMyChain is at it again. The biking videographer, musician, songwriter, transportation activist (he in Salem right now rallying against the CRC project), talk-show host, and general renaissance man is set to debut his latest project tomorrow night: Open Bike Night.

The idea, says Dan, is an event that’s part poetry slam, part jam session, part film screening, and part social hour where a love (or curiosity) for bicycles is the common thread. Dan has been a part of the local bike scene for years, covering events from his Disco Trike and often broadcasting live to the web from the streets. He’ll bring that same technology to Open Bike Night as the entire event will be broadcast live to the CrankMyChain YouTube channel.

First look: New mid-block crossing for Rock Creek Trail

Washington County advocates are celebrating the completion of a new mid-block crossing. Now, people riding on the Rock Creek Trail (a paved path) will have a much more intuitive, safe, and efficient way to get across NW Evergreen Parkway.

When we first reported on this project back in November 2010, reader Matt Picio shared with us that people on bikes were forced to go 1/4 out of their way to a high-traffic intersection” in order to cross. “Not very pleasant,” he wrote.

If riding across the Sellwood Bridge is part of your daily routine, you need to make other plans. The 1,100 foot long bridge is set to close from this Thursday January 17th – 24th while construction crews move it — yes, move it — to the north to make room for the new bridge. The old bridge will become the detour around ongoing construction.

Instead of building a new bridge to use until the new one is done in summer 2015, Multnomah County decided on the “Big Move” because it will save time (about one year) and money ($5-10 million), and it will have fewer environmental impacts.

‘De Ronde’ date announced (and coming soon, ‘De Ronde CX’)

Tour of Flanders, Portland-Style - De Ronde-37

The “De Ronde” — a legendary unsanctioned road ride known for its myriad unrelenting climbs in the hills above downtown Portland — will be held on Saturday, April 20th. The announcement was made by ride organizers today. Organizers also announced that “there will be another equally challenging ride heading south” the very next day and later this fall they will debut “De Ronde CX.” As its name implies, the CX version will be a more off-road, technically challenging route that promises, “West hills gravel roads, singletrack, staircases, beer, etc.”
