Gala event, concert will toast Blumenauer’s 40 year career

Portland native Earl Blumenauer has served in elected office in Oregon since 1972 when he won a seat in the Oregon House of Representatives at the age of 24. He’s been in politics ever since. On June 14th, Blumenauer’s supporters will throw him a big party to commemorate his 40 years in office.

The event, dubbed “40 Years of Leadership,” will take place at Memorial Coliseum and will include performances by Pink Martini and Storm Large.

During his four decades of leadership, Blumenauer has presided over much of the bicycle and transportation legacy that our region is so well known for. From his position as head of the City of Portland Department of Public Works (what we now call the Bureau of Transportation) from 1987 to 1996, Blumenauer (with Mia Birk as his right-hand woman) oversaw an explosion in bikeway miles. From his office in Washington D.C., where he’s served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives since 1996, Blumenauer is without a doubt the most influential and well-known champion for bicycling on Capitol Hill.

New Blazers GM picks Portland over L.A. because of “bike lanes” – UPDATED

Our bike lanes welcome you Mr. Olshey.

[Publisher’s Note: Turns out that this “bike lanes” thing, as reported by ESPN’s John Hollinger, is part of an ongoing joke he plays with his readers about Portland. See end of post for full update/explanation. — Jonathan]

The Portland Trail Blazers announced today that, after nearly one year without one, they’ve named Neil Olshey as their General Manager. The move seems to be something of a coup for the Blazers, as he comes to Portland from the Los Angeles Clippers, a team that has made a dramatic turnaround from laughingstock of the NBA to legit playoff contender.

At this point, you’re probably wondering why I’m sharing this news on BikePortland. Well, as many of you know from our Bike to Blazers events (which come to think of it, we should fire back up this coming season), I love basketball. Even if you don’t care about the Blazers, as an urban transportation activist and citizen of Portland, you should appreciate that the team has a significant impact on our city in many ways.

But even just naming a new GM obviously isn’t Front Page worthy on this blog… So, the reason I’m sharing it is because it seems Mr. Olshey is something of a bike fan.

TriMet announced today that construction of their Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Transit Project will mean traffic detours beginning this month.

Of particular interest is the closure of the SE Powell overcrossing and a detour near the south end of the Eastbank Esplanade.

Beginning June 15th and continuing for “about a year” TriMet will be working on the demolition of the SE Powell Blvd overpass. The overpass will be closed through the summer of 2013 while a new structure is built in its place.

Below are more details from TriMet about the work they’re doing as well as detour maps for both areas:

New Portland Police Bureau videos aim to debunk “traffic myths”

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

The Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division just released a series of videos to debunk what they call “the top five most common traffic myths.” All the videos could apply to people riding bicycles and one of them is targeted specifically at bike traffic.

The PPB says the videos cover issues that officers frequently hear as excuses when citations are issued. The videos are narrated by PPB Traffic Division Sergeant Bret Barnum. Along with the videos, Sgt. Barnum shares the specific Oregon Revised Statute (ORS) that goes along with them.

Here they are:

A gas station that likes bikes

Not your typical gas station.
(Photos © J. Maus/BikePortland)

I recently returned from a quick trip to Fullerton, California to help my brother celebrate his 40th birthday. Given that I’m from Portland, a place known for being, you know, all sustainable and stuff, my brother wanted to show me this cool new gas station that had just opened up near his house.

When my brother’s new Lexus CT Hybrid was nearly empty, we pulled into Propel. I could instantly tell it was a different kind of gas station. Not only do they have warm and fuzzy marketing banners that say things like, “I choose a healthier future for kids”; pumps that dispense all sorts of fuel concoctions like E85 ethanol and biodiesel; and the ability to offset your carbon footprint right at the pump as you fill up; they also have a sweet little spot for bikes…

Help us make ‘The Case for Cycling’

Check it out and contribute your smarts.

Back in April, when the City Club of Portland announced they would embark on a “comprehensive” study of how bicycling fits into Portland’s transportation policy, we took notice. This is because the City Club is an old, respected and influential organization and their research is taken seriously by local leaders and policymakers in Portland.

Amid concerns that City Club might embark on their study with a bias against bicycling, some folks around the local bike activism table wondered how best to make sure they start off with the right facts. On that note, local citizen activist (and leader/policymaker himself) Chris Smith has stepped up to create a new information resource he plans to present to City Club this week.

Man receives jail time, assault conviction for Highway 101 collision

Curry County DA convicted driver of
reckless driving and assault.

A man has been convicted on assault and reckless driving charges for driving his car into two women as they rode their bicycles on the Oregon Coast Bike Route last fall. The collision occurred on October 3rd, about 11 miles north of Gold Beach on Highway 101.

30-year-old Martha McClean and 26-year old Essya Nabbali were on a bike tour of the Oregon Coast and were pedaling southbound on a very narrow part of the highway known as Ophir Dike, when 62-year-old Neal Lawson struck them from behind with his PT Cruiser traveling at about 55 mph.

Here’s the news and other cool stuff that caught our eyes this past week…

– Bandon, Oregon is home to a new bike shop, South Coast Bicycles, owned by two-time national cycling champion Karl Maxon.

– We love this “Cycles of Life” comic by Grant Snider as found on his Incidental Comics site.

– A man has been acquitted of charges he struck an elderly person with his bicycle after it was determined police mistook him for another person in a Giants jersey one game-day in September of 2011.

– A recent U.S Supreme Court ruling supports strip-searches of people who commit minor offenses, including “riding a bicycle without an audible bell.”
