No longer “pedestrian”: Advocacy group to unveil new name, logo, mission

Out with the old.

The Willamette Pedestrian Coalition will not exist — at least in name — after Saturday night. The non-profit that pushes for infrastructure and policies to encourage more walking has been operating in Portland for over two decades, and now it’s ready for a major change.

Major changes at our region’s walking advocacy organization are bound to impact bicycling. Walking advocates push for many policies and projects that reduce car use and help create the conditions necessary for better bike access.

At their annual Weston Awards fundraising event this Saturday, the WPC will unveil a new name, a new logo, and an expanded vision.

CRC to go back to the drawing board.

The Columbian just reported a whopper of a story about the Columbia River Crossing project:

It’s time to go back to the drawing board and come up with a new plan to replace the Interstate 5 Bridge over the Columbia River, U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, and several other Republican lawmakers from Southwest Washington, said in a statement issued today.

Rep. Beutler and nine other Republican politicians in southwest Washington are feeling emboldened after the elections and the rejection of Proposition 1 (a tax from C-Tran that would have provided operating funds for light rail on the CRC).

The statement lists several of the project’s nagging problems and lawmakers say without a re-design they can support, the project is never going to happen. Here’s an excerpt (download the letter here):

BTA adds five board members to “move beyond ‘preaching to the choir'”

Earlier this month, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) welcomed five new members to their Board of Directors. This brings the total up to 22 people on this important advisory body. You may not realize it, but the BTA Board has a major influence on the organization’s tone, focus, and direction.

As the BTA gears up for the upcoming legislative session and a possible transportation funding measure in 2016, their board’s decisions could have a huge impact on bicycling in Portland and throughout the state.

The new board members are: Lanny Gower, licensing and operating tax manager for Con-way Freight, Inc.; Valerie Hoyle, formerly with Burley Design, now an Oregon State legislator representing west Eugene; Lois Moss, a former bike shop owner who founded and directed Walk+Roll Cleveland; Dennis Mulvihill, a retired government relations manager for Washington County; and Justin Yuen, President of local software company FMYI (For My Innovation).

Elly Blue and Portland’s bike book boom

These are boom times in the bike book publishing world. From big coffee-table books detailing the beauty of bike design, to guidebooks on where and how to ride and everything in between — the cycling renaissance in North America is being mirrored by an equally robust uptick in the amount of new books that document it.

Major publishing houses have noticed and they’re certainly getting a piece of the action; but here in Portland, a growing number of authors are turning to small press and independent publishers.

And who’s at the forefront of this fledgling revolution? None other than activist, businesswoman, writer, journalist and southeast Portland resident Elly Blue. Under her Taking the Lane Media banner, Elly is publishing, consulting on, distributing, marketing, and even writing bike books at a breakneck pace. After cutting her teeth on writing and bike journalism here on BikePortland back in the day, Elly found big success as a columnist for Grist.org. Since that gig ended, Elly has spent the last two years learning everything she can about the publishing business (and she’s also become something of an expert on how to win a Kickstarter campaign).
