National mag says bikes part of Portland’s “economic renaissance”

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

It’s sort of a running national joke that while Portland might have its perks (great coffee, beer, biking, food, independent businesses, natural areas, and so on), our economy isn’t much to brag about. Portlandia’s “Where young people go to retire” joke was the punchline heard ’round the world.

But what if we turned all that great stuff into a foundation for a healthy local economy? Well, according to Slate Magazine’s “Moneybox” blogger and commentator Matthew Yglesias, who visited Portland last week, we have. In a blog post today titled, How Portland Got Its Groove Back: The city where “young people go to retire” is having an economic renaissance, with lessons for the rest of the country, Yglesias takes a close look at current economic indicators and determines that Portland is “now doing fine.”

Not only does Yglesias’s article feature a person on a bike in the lead photo, he directly includes our local bike industry and general bike-friendliness as one of the key reasons we’ve rebounded. Here’s an excerpt:

New bike counter tallies 7,432 Hawthorne Bridge bike trips on first day of operation

6,038 as of 7:49 pm last night.
(Photo © J. Maus/BikePorltand)

Portland’s new bike counter had its first full day of operation yesterday and it logged 7,432 bike trips across the Hawthorne Bridge. That number is relatively close to 8,044, which is the average daily number of trips PBOT tallied in their official 2011 counts.

As the counter rolls out, I’m still learning more about it and clarifying some confusion surrounding it.

First, I want to share that contrary to what I understood from PBOT staff, the daily and annual bike trip data is available online. The company we purchased the counter from, Montreal-based Eco-Counter, has a website up for the Hawthorne Bridge counter which displays the data in a few different formats. (UPDATE: According to PBOT bike coordinator Roger Geller, the website is updated once a day at 2:00 am.)

Openings, closings, expansions: A bike shop news roundup

Green Garage made a move.
(Photos © J. Maus/BikePortland)

In a city with something like 70 bike shops, change is the only constant. With a few noteworthy happenings bouncing around my head recently, I figured it was time to round them all up into one post. If I miss anything, feel free to drop me a line and I’ll add it to a future roundup. Here goes…

A small move for Green Garage (now featuring billiards while you wait)
Green Garage (FB) is a small, one-man service shop on N. Interstate at Mississippi (across from Widmer Brewery). The other day I noticed his signs moved one door over so I peeked in to find out what was going on. Owner Bill Fasano says he moved into the space next door to get more room and get better organized (his previous space also got rented out by a medical marijuana business). The space he’s in now was a former bar and lounge so it has some interesting qualities. Besides the bar (which comes in handy for after-hours hanging out and events), Green Garage is now the only bike shop in Portland where you can play a few games of pool while your bike gets serviced.

Portland makes bikes count on the Hawthorne Bridge

Bike counter unveiling-6

Let the counting begin!
(Photos © J. Maus/BikePortland)

From now on, people crossing the Hawthorne Bridge by bike will count. Literally. A new bike counter (a.k.a. the bicycle barometer) — the first of its kind in the United States — went live at midnight last night and at this morning’s press conference the number was already well over 2,000.

The event was a chance for the City of Portland to unveil the new counter; but the moment really belonged to Cycle Oregon, the local non-profit that gave the City $20,000 to make it a reality. (The idea for the counter came from PBOT Bike Coordinator Roger Geller. Read more background in our archives.)

Jonathan Nicholas, the former columnist for The Oregonian who co-founded Cycle Oregon, was on hand this morning. As usual, his words cut through the clutter and I think they’re worth sharing verbatim:
