New bike shop coming to Oregon City

A new bicycle dealership is set to open in downtown Oregon City (13 miles south of Portland) this weekend. First City Cycles will have a soft opening this Saturday and a grand opening is planned for mid-August.

The shop will be located at 916 Main Street (the corner of 10th and Main) just a few blocks north of the eastern entrance to the Oregon City bridge. Store owner Blane Meier, says the shop will be a full-service dealer with bikes from Specialized, accessories, apparel, parts and service. Meier also says he’s lined up an impressive team for a new shop with seven employees set to serve the community.

At the store’s soft opening on July 21st, the first 100 customers will receive a 5% discount on all parts, repairs, and accessories. Through the end of August, the store is also doing $50 tune-ups (that’s $25 off the regular price).

What’s at stake with last-minute changes to Sellwood Bridge project design

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Ouch.

Like many of you, I’m still trying to figure out what exactly is going on with the Sellwood Bridge project. I have not followed it very closely since the celebratory groundbreaking back in December. My sense was that the project came out great for bicycling with ample riding room and connectivity.

Then, on Tuesday night at a PBOT Bicycle Advisory Committee meeting, I heard the first murmur that changes were afoot. By Wednesday, the news was public that, due to a variety of factors (including under-estimated project costs and rising steel and fuel costs), the County needed to shave $3.2 million off the project’s cost. I’m still not clear on how the cost-cutting decisions were made; but the fact remains that of the $3.2 million in cuts, about $2.1 million directly impacts bicycling.

Hales’ campaign site removes reference to controversial article in The Oregonian

Hales’ campaign website.

The Charlie Hales campaign has significantly edited a page on their website that explains the mayoral candidate’s priorities on transportation.

Since the end of February, Hales has been parroting themes from an article in The Oregonian that blamed the City’s (alleged) priority on “bike routes” as a main reason why we don’t have enough money to pave and maintain “crumbling roads.” The article was the height of bicycle scapegoating and anti-bike sensationalism perpetuated by The Oregonian. The article received swift condemnation from the Portland Mercury, Mayor Sam Adams (who published a lengthy rebuttal) and the Bicycle Transportation Alliance.

The Monday Roundup

“If I didn’t bike to work, I’d spend my weekdays almost entirely indoors… On the bike, I get trees, air and a great way to get to know city neighborhoods.”
— David Keegan,
The New York Times

Here’s the news and other cool stuff that caught our eyes this past week…

– The Chicago Tribune talks to officials in San Francisco and Chicago who expect a “bicycle boom” thanks to those cities’ ambitious plans for expanding and improving infrastructure for bicycles and car sharing systems.

– There’s some confusion as to whether the new federal transportation bill increases or decreases funding for bicycling infrastructure and if you’re looking to do your own research you might want to have a look at this extensive collection of information about the bill.

Major changes to Sellwood Bridge design: BTA urges county to delay final vote

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Last minute cost-cutting has resulted in proposed design changes to the $268 million Sellwood Bridge project that could have significant impacts on bicycling. With a key vote on the final design set for this coming Monday (7/16) and a decision on the plans set for Thursday (7/19), the Bicycle Transportation Alliance is concerned that there’s not enough time to consider the changes and they are urging the county to delay the vote.

Citing rising costs, the County has proposed $3.2 million in project cutbacks. The biggest ticket item on the chopping block is a $2 million multi-use path bridge. Another $81,000 proposed cutback will shelve plans for “surface treatments” on the bike/walk lanes.

The BTA has been tracking this project closely and has a volunteer on the Citizen’s Advisory Committee. Here’s more from a BTA blog post yesterday:

It looks like yet another amazing weekend to be a bike lover in (and around) Portland. So much stuff going on!

Here’s a quick roundup (and feel free to plug your ride/event in the comments)…

Two big events are happening to the south and the north of Portland. The Cycle Oregon Weekend Ride, with its “Heart of the Valley” theme, is taking over the campus of Oregon State University in Corvallis and the venerable Seattle to Portland Classic (STP) starts tomorrow.
