Here’s the news and other cool stuff that caught our eyes this past week, including lots of news from Los Angeles…

– In a surprise announcement, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa says Bike Nation, a CicLAvia partner, will fund a bike share program for Downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, Venice Beach and Westwood consisting of 4,000 bikes at 400 kiosks.

– Speaking of CicLAvia, organizers estimate that 100,000 people came out for the car-free event this Sunday, described by the Los Angeles Time as the city’s “marquee event for pedestrians and cyclists”.

– The Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC), in partnership with the LA Department of Transport and R.E.I, has launched LA’s first Spanish-language bike safety campaign.

Owner: Caitlin Wichlacz
OwnerEmail: cwichlacz@gmail.com
Description: 2005 Black Bianchi Milano Cafe Racer (men’s frame) stolen from inside my home at approximately 3am, April 13, 2012.
It has black plastic fenders (missing one fender clip) and a River City Bikes sticker on it. At the time of theft, it was equipped with a giant ding-dong bell and little red Serfas silicone headlight on the handle bar, red cat eye light attached to the seat post, and a cheap aluminum rack attached to the back with a piece of nylon rope and a scrap of fabric. The paint on the top middle of the top tube is scuffed down to silver, about the side of a dime, and the paint on the back just above the rack is all scratched to hell where I let my chain lock rattle around after wrapping it around the seat post. (The Kryptonite chain lock was wrapped around the seat post at the time of theft.) There were also two hardware store p clamps I left on the rear after I’d detached an old rack.
The nut/bolt holding the handle bar in the stem is slightly rusty, and the black leather grip on the left hand side has scooted in about a quarter inch, and I couldn’t get it to scoot back out to the edge.
The seat is original, but the switch for the built-in light has broken off on the underside.

Spurred by tragedy, Kristi Finney dedicates herself to activism

The mother of a young man killed by a drunk driver while bicycling on SE Division last year has become a dedicated traffic safety activist. Since the death of her son Dustin on August 12th, Kristi Finney has become a student of traffic safety policies and Oregon vehicle law and has devoted herself to civic engagement at every opportunity.

We got our first hint at Mrs. Finney’s composure and compassion when, at the sentencing hearing of 19-year-old Ashawntae Rosemon (the man who struck Dustin, and then fled the scene), she looked him in the eye and said:

Future of French Prairie Bridge hinges on Wilsonville City Council decision

[Patrick Croasdaile contributed reporting to this story.]

This coming Monday, the Wilsonville City Council will convene an important work session that could determine the future of the French Prairie Bike-Ped Emergency Bridge over the Willamette River.

The City of Wilsonville was awarded a $1.25 million federal grant in 2009 to develop a feasibility study and design alternatives for the bridge. At Monday’s meeting, the Council is expected to vote on whether to formally accept the grant and invest the required 10% local match ($125,000) to keep the project moving forward. Or, they could choose to hit the pause button.
