– Oregon’s ban on cellphones use by motor vehicle operators may have been controversial at first, but now even the National Transportation Safety Board says that distracted driving is an epidemic that should be addressed with a ban on cellphone use in the car. During their announcement, distracted driving was compared to other public health dangers like drunk driving and smoking.

Twice in the last few weeks I’ve ridden my bike along an unfamiliar route. Both rides were enjoyable; but the key difference was how difficult it was to find my way.

On the first ride, through an area where I’ve lived and ridden regularly for the past four years, I had to bring a personal tour guide. On the second ride I navigated an area I had not seen from a bike seat in nearly a decade, along a route I was not familiar with; but I did it completely solo, with no tour guide and no map.

Positive Spin: Six months later, crash victim meets rescuers who saved his life

It might sound trite, but Jim Phillips truly is lucky to be alive. Jim, 68, was on the Pioneer Century ride this past summer, enjoying a perfect day in the saddle, when he crashed hard on a steep downhill.

The crash broke Jim’s ribs, neck and back. His lungs were punctured which led to severe internal hemorrhaging. He cried out for help, in “agonizing” pain, from far down in a ditch. But no one heard him. It wasn’t until he pulled himself to the side of the road that he finally got some attention. The four people that stopped to help him couldn’ have known it at the time, but their actions very likely saved Jim’s life..

Metro ‘Opt-In’ survey results show big interest in bicycling

A Metro ‘Opt-In’ survey on active transportation shows that a majority of respondents from around the region feel it’s important to make greater investments in dedicated bicycle infrastructure. The survey, which was answered by 3,865 members of the Opt-In feedback panel, was to help inform in Metro’s first ever Active Transportation Plan they’ll begin to develop next year.
