What better way to learn about the greener side of Portland than by bike. Join me for a casual bike ride to various community gardens*. We will meet up at jcafe (Bring your coffee mugs). The ride will descend upon the Portland Farmers Market at Portland State University. The ride will be 10-15 miles long depending on the size of the group.

9:00am Racing the Tubes
Contestants will race around PDX, checking in at various pre-determined locations by associating a wifi (802.11b/g) device with pre-setup access points. Contestants shall receive points based on what order they reach said APs. But wait! There’s more! Contestants shall also be able to improve scores by skipping up to two of the checkpoints in the race. They will be docked points for skipping an AP, but their new improved place in line will garner them more points as they traverse the course.

This morning’s news that the Morrison Bridge multi-use path will be closed to both directions of bicycle traffic from this Monday until mid-September, was just the latest in a string of closures that impact vital connections in our bikeway network.

This post will hopefully serve as a reference for the current closures and as a place to share your experiences with the detours.

Thanks to reader Esther Harlow, below is a handy map to give you a perspective on how close and interconnected the closures are. Below the map, is more information on the four closures:

Hillsboro Mayor responds to controversial comments

“Comments I made at the May 25 MPAC meeting created a stir in the bicycling community.”
— Jerry Willey, Mayor of Hillsboro

At a meeting of Metro’s Policy Advisory Committee (MPAC) late last month Hillsboro Mayor Jerry Willey raised eyebrows when he said “bicyclists” need to “participate” in paying for the costs of transportation infrastructure mandated by our region’s climate change goals.

“We all aspire to have more bike lanes and certainly more bike and pedestrian streets; but who pays the cost of that?” he wondered; and then continued to say, “… nothing, from actually, quite frankly, the bicycle group.”

Willey has now responded to his comments in a follow-up news story by Metro and in a memo distributed at this week’s MPAC meeting.

PBOT issues statement on N. Williams project delay

“By extending the community process to be more inclusive, by listening with respect to all voices, and by striving for a project that meets the multiple objectives we’ve identified, I believe we can arrive at a preferred project alternative that is well-supported and technically feasible.”
— Ellen Vanderslice, PBOT

The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) issued a letter to stakeholders yesterday to explain why they’ve decided to extend the timeline on their North Williams Traffic Safety Operations Project.

We shared a report from the most recent Stakeholder Advisory Committee meeting when the announcement was first made. During that meeting it was clear that — even though a recent open house showed a strong endorsement for how to proceed with the project — PBOT is still facing stiff objections from some members of the SAC and the general public.

The letter (below) is signed by PBOT project manager Ellen Vanderslice.

The greater Portland metropolitan area is one step closer to having another regional non-profit bike education and advocacy organization.

The necessary paperwork to receive official non-profit status for the Clark County Cycling Coalition (C-4), southwest Washington’s newest bike organization, is complete and ready to be mailed, according to C-4 president Eric Giacchino.

Giacchino, a Vancouver fire fighter and Air Force veteran (profiled in The Oregonian earlier this year), explained that he has “tremendous” respect for the efforts of local volunteer bike projects (there’s a few), but he wants the Clark County area to have its own “umbrella” organization that promotes “polite, safe, cycling.”

Multnomah County announced yesterday that the multi-use path on the Morrison Bridge will close to all traffic beginning Monday (6/13) and the multi-use path that serves both directions of bike traffic will be closed until mid-September of this year.

The closure is for a $4.2 million construction project that will replace the metal lift span with a solid deck surface that will improve traction and safety for motor vehicles. The project is expected to last until late this year. Below is the breakdown of how traffic will be impacted:
