‘Cirque du Cycling’ fest to feature cargo bike race

The annual Cirque du Cycling bike fest on N. Mississippi Avenue is this Sunday. The event brings together many facets of Portland’s bike scene and this year organizers have added yet another — a cargo bike race.

It was bound to happen as Portland’s cargo bike scene has gone absolutely bananas in recent years (I’ll try to share more photos and notes from a recent cargo bike meet-up soon).

The Cirque includes a family ride, an art/freak bike parade, a very competitive criterium race, and it’s a benefit for Albina Youth Opportunity School. Event organizer Ayleen Crotty says the Cargo Bike Race is a natural addition.

Legislature appoints two new members to Oregon Transportation Commission

The Oregon Transportation Commission, an influential group appointed by the Governor to establish state transportation policy, will welcome two new members at the end of this month.

Legislators in Salem voted yesterday to approve the nominations of Mark Frohnmayer and Tammy Baney.

Frohnmayer is the son of former University of Oregon President David Frohnmayer. The younger Frohnmayer is a former video game programmer and entrepreneur who is now the president of Eugene-based electric vehicle (EV) company Arcimoto. Frohnmayer is also on the board of Drive Oregon, an EV initiative that is partially funded by the State of Oregon.

This is not a drill. This is it folks. Shift’s 17-day Pedalpalooza starts today… err… this morning actually. The “Sisyphean Cruller Crawl” starts bright and early at 7:00 am is the first of 12 events today.

Job: Design Engineer (Yakima Products, Inc)

Job Title: Design Engineer

Job Description:
As part of the Yakima design engineering team this position will be responsible for design, testing, cost improvement, value engineering, analysis, and documentation of new products and/or redesign of current products, or manage reverse engineering programs using criteria established by the Engineering and Category Business Manager. In addition the position will be focused on creating and/or assisting in developing the products and Product Specifications related to vehicle fit of roof rack base systems and accessories in conjunction with the CBM and Advanced Development Team and will partner with the Advanced Development Team, Offshore Design Team(s), Category Business Managers, Test Engineer(s) and other groups to ensure design integrity. Other key aspects of this position contribute to achieving and sustaining the Yakima Strategic Business Plan and Initiatives, global competitive advantage, and profitable market growth strategy.

Scope & Responsibilities:
•Design new components and/or systems for vehicle base systems or redesign existing product to the criteria set forth by the Top of Car Category Business Manager, on-time and within budget.
•Work with the Product Fit Technicians to drive new fit solutions into the Market.
•Assist in the design of new products or redesign of existing product to the criteria set forth by the Engineering Manager, on-time and within budget.
•Collaborate with the Product Fit Team(s) to develop safe and robust vehicle attachments.
•Collaborate with the Industrial Designer(s)/Engineer(s) to determine the proper form and style of the product.
•Produce product requirements that are fully and correctly defined, documented, developed, tested, delivered on schedule and within budget.

Specific Duties:
•Work with the Product Fit Technician(s) to identify vehicles requiring new fit development work and testing.
•Work with the model shop personnel or outside suppliers to provide working prototypes, models, etc. to demonstrate the feasibility of a design and prove the concept.
•Generate 2D Drawings, 3D CAD, PLM BOM’s, PFMEA’s, testing, delivered on schedule and within budget.
•Responsible for generating design documentation, i.e., 3D CAD, 2D drawings, ECO’s, tolerance analysis, FMEA’s and FEA.
•Validate design specifications through product performance testing and analysis.
•Develop cost estimating for new products and their associated tooling for the Project Team to review.
•Work with the Test Engineer to determine the performance testing procedures for prototype and production parts, to test the viability of the new product and design equipment, and to perform these tests if required.
•Work with the Project Manager to keep the project on schedule and on budget.
•Produce completed engineering work using world-class processes and techniques.
•Use engineering/company programs to meet performance, cost and schedule requirements.
•Contribute to the Product Development Process and other sustaining engineering requirements to meet product and business performance metrics and timing requirements.
•Work with Manufacturing and Global Supply Chain/Sourcing to develop component specifications that will assure the acceptable product quality and manufacturability.
•Keep informed of latest developments in the field by reading, individual contacts, trade shows and attendance at appropriate meetings.
•Carry out other duties, responsibilities, and projects as may be assigned, in an effective manner.

Qualifications:
•Degree in Design/Mechanical Engineering or related field
•Minimum five (5) years of related engineering work experience required
•Proficiency in the use of Solidworks CAD software including Surfacing and COSMOS
•Extensive knowledge of vehicle makes and models and automotive industry preferred
•A thorough understanding of manufacturing processes, test methods and basic machine shop practices, including but not limited to injection molding, vacuum forming, metal fabrication, die casting and extrusions
•Lean manufacturing experience, experience with off-shore manufacturers mechanism design, and knowledge of outdoor products or equipment preferred
•Experienced using design tools such as FMEA and GD&T preferred
•Demonstrable creativity and innovative thinking
•Strong attention to detail and quality
•Capable of managing multiple projects in a deadline driven environment
•Written and Oral Skills: English mandatory. Bilingual fluency in Mandarin Chinese desirable
•Advanced level with P.C.’s: Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, PowerPoint
•Three (3) years experience in completing and managing projects with minimal oversight and against aggressive timelines
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills
•Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member and/or leader of a team
•Demonstrably effective interpersonal verbal and written communication skills, both within the department and cross-functionally
•Demonstrably excellent organizational and project/time management skills
•Knowledge of the outdoor sports hard goods and/or automotive industries a plus
•U.S. citizen or must possess valid INS Green Card
•Must possess a valid/current U.S. passport and ability to travel internationally without restrictions

Physical Requirements:
•Able to sit and work at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time
•Able to perform general office and administrative duties: copying, filing, using a telephone, etc.
•Able to stoop, crouch, kneel, bend at the waist and reach on a daily basis
•Able to safely lift, move, and carry objects of up to 80 pounds occasionally
•Able to safely operate machinery in a Model Shop and Test Lab environment; such as, hand drills, drill press, sanders, electric hoists and various hand tools
•Able to use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and operate hand tools and machinery
•Must have corrected vision to 20/30
•Must not be color blind
•Must be able to distinguish colors and tints
•Requires close vision abilities
