Commissioner Fritz wants changes to SW Ankeny proposal
Portland City Commissioner Amanda Fritz has further explained her concerns with the existing carfree SW Ankeny proposal. Last week we shared how Fritz threw a wrench in PBOT’s plans to convert one block of Ankeny between 2nd and 3rd Avenues downtown into a sidewalk cafe — making it a carfree street.
The ordinance came up last week but failed to pass unanimously (which was required due it having an “emergency” clause) with Fritz being the only no vote. At the meeting, she heard testimony from a representative of Sisters of the Road, a non-profit that helps Portland’s homeless. We reported that Fritz’s concerns were based on how the proposal would impact access to the street by citizens who were not paying customers of the businesses.
Alaska Airlines follows Southwest with ‘Bikes Fly Free’ promotion at PDX
Last month we shared the good news that, in honor of Pedalpalooza, Southwest Airlines decided to waive all bike baggage fees for flights going out of Portland.
Now, according to reader (and Southwest employee) Tom LaBonty, Alaska Airlines is doing the same. Tom sent in the flyer below about the deal..

Pedal power at the Pride Parade
This weekend was the big Pride Festival in Portland. On Sunday, my family and I rode down to Waterfront Park to watch the annual parade. It was massive! I was seriously impressed with all the community groups that entered and the energy and enthusiasm of all the people who walked and rolled by.
One pleasant surprise was all the bicycles I saw taking part in the parade — even the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) and Bike Gallery shared an entry. Congressman Earl Blumenauer led a group of his supporters and staff with a “Are you bike curious?” shirt on.
Check out more photos of the bike-sightings in the parade below, followed by the full slideshow…
Naked Ride tidbits: Poster and shirt sales, thank yous, and Guinness World Record?

People from all over the world and still buzzing about Portland’s World Naked Bike Ride that happened Saturday night. By nearly all accounts it was a another solid success.
Before this one becomes history, there are a few things I wanted to share.
The Monday Roundup
A design student claims that a bike helmet made of corrugated cardboard can outperform the regular helmets you buy at the store.
Here’s the bike news from around the world that caught my eye this week:
– As gas prices rise, many are taking up bicycling to save money — even in small towns and rural areas.
– Minneapolis opens what some are calling the nation’s first bicycle freeway.
– A new report takes a hard look at the shrinking transportation options of the U.S.’s growing population of seniors.
Portland Parks: Esplanade re-opens at noon today
After 20 days, a vital artery in Portland bike network will be re-opened. The Portland Parks & Recreation Bureau just announced that the closure of the floating portion of the Eastbank Esplanade — which was closed on May 31st due to high water on the Willamette River — is set to re-open today at 12 noon.
This closure marked the first time in the Esplanade’s 10 year history that it had to be closed due to high water. The closure made north-south bicycle travel in the area more difficult for the estimated 2,750 that use the route with their bikes every day.

New study finds bike/walk projects create more jobs than “road-only” projects
A new study by the Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) at the University of Massachusetts, Pedestrian and Bicycle Infrastructure: A National Study of Employment Impacts, has found that infrastructure projects with major bicycling and walking components are more labor-intensive and create 46% more jobs overall than “road-only” projects.
National non-profit America Bikes released a statement about the study today with their Executive Director Caron Whitaker saying, “It’s no secret that investing in transportation infrastructure creates jobs and helps the economy. This study proves bicycle and pedestrian projects are no exception — in fact, they are especially efficient in creating jobs.”
