Greg LeMond, the Nevada-born bike racer who endeared himself to millions as the first American to win the prestigious Tour de France, is set to make an appearance in Portland this Thursday (9/22).

LeMond, who won the Tour in 1986, 1989 and 1990 and is now CEO of LeMond Fitness, will be in town to participate in the Hood River edition of the Echelon Grand Fondo which takes place this Saturday. Packet pick-up for the event is at West End Bikes (1111 SW Stark St) and event organizers say LeMond will be at the shop between 5:30 and 7:00 pm Thursday night.

Executive Director of the Echelon Grand Fondo Hunter Ziesing says LeMond was at their Palo Alto event last weekend and was, “a blast to be with.” “He’s personable (practically met every participant), very funny, and admittedly out of race shape, so come hang with him this weekend.”

Tacks move to Williams, claim several more victims

Small tacks continue to cause flat tires
on a popular North Portland bike route.
(Photos: Rob Story)

When I reported about tacks in the bike lane on N. Vancouver Avenue last week, I hoped it was just an isolated incident. They could have even been — as one commenter suggested — debris from a construction site near Legacy hospital.

Unfortunately it seems this isn’t just a random, isolated incident.

I’ve now received several more reports of people getting flats from small, sharp tacks and they seem to all be coming from N Williams Ave (which is one street over and part of a north-south couplet with Vancouver). To date, I have 15 17 separate reports of flat tires caused by these tacks.

Reader Rob Story wrote in to say, “Another day, another handful of tacks thrown on Williams. I picked these up somewhere between Rose quarter and Tillamook”…

Collision in Aloha leads to arrest, raises questions about legal rights – UPDATED

Damage to a Sheriff’s patrol car after it
was involved in a collision with another vehicle.
(Photos: Washington County Sheriff’s Office)

A collision in Aloha (about 11 miles west of downtown Portland) last night led to minor injuries and the arrest for 44-year-old Christopher Shostak. Shostak was operating his bicycle on a residential street when he became involved in a collision with a patrol car operated by a Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Shostak was bicycling eastbound on SW Blanton Road at 7:49 pm (about 30 minutes after sunset). The patrol car was headed in the opposite direction and then turned left into SW Pinewood Place. Here’s what the official police statement (titled, “Bicyclist Arrested After Crashing Into Patrol Car”) says happened next:

“It was reported that as the Sheriff’s Deputy was turning onto SW Pinewood Place, the bicyclist ran into the front of the patrol car.”

Oregon Manifest kicks off this Friday

As of this Friday night, the rules of utility bike design might be changed forever. At least that’s the hope of the entrants and organizers of the Oregon Manifest. The Manifest has challenged a field of the best and brightest builders and designers in the country to create the “ultimate modern utility bike” and the big reveal happens this Friday night in Northwest Portland.

The murmurs I’ve heard from entrants and organizers are enough to make even the most jaded bike industry veteran excited.
