Read police report, hear more from mom in Tennessee child biking case
– Download PDF –
There have been some developments in the story from Elizabethton, Tennessee I shared yesterday. The local newspaper has published a story that makes it appear as though the incident has been smoothed over. However, Teresa Tryon, the girl’s mother, has been commenting here on BikePortland to share that the issue is far from resolved.
Ms. Tryon alleges that she is being “victimized” by the police and that their story has changed as the media attention around the case has grown.
I have since received a copy of the police report filed in the incident, which I’ll share excerpts from below (download PDF of it here)

Food for thought from Seattle: A $60 car tax and advice from The Economist
“With a very few exceptions, America is no place for cyclists.”
— The Economist
Two news stories involving our big city neighbors to the north, Seattle, are being shared around the web this morning and I think they’re worth your attention (and commentary). The first is about a new tax on car registration to pay for transportation projects and the second is about how Seattle’s lack of Euro-style bikeways is resulting in fatal bicycle collisions.
The Seattle Times reports on the $60 “car-tab fee” being proposed as a bond measure by the City of Seattle. The new fee would look to raise $204 million over 10 years to pay for a wide variety of transportation projects — from basic road repairs and maintenance to transit and bicycle-centric projects.
BTA to host bike share demonstration event
Hot off the City Council adoption of a $2 million federal funding request to start bike sharing in Portland last month, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) is set to host a public demonstration of what folks can expect once the project hits the streets.
The BTA says attendees of this coming Tuesday’s (9/6) event will be able to kick the tires on several of the most popular bike share platforms currently in use throughout North America. Vendors expected to be at the demo include B-cycle (backed by Trek and two other corporations), Bixi (Montreal), NiceRide (Minneapolis/St. Paul), and Capital Bikeshare (Washington D.C.).
