Two more Bike to Work Day events coming up

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Bike to Work Day/Week/Month events are similar to several other national bike events (like the Bicycle Film Festival, Tour de Fat, and so on) that have trouble being a big deal in Portland. But even so, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some fun events to attend.

Yesterday I shared some info on the BTA’s Bike to Work Day event coming up on Friday May 20th; but there are two other events you might want to add to your calendar.

Efforts to improve bike access through the Lloyd District took yet another turn for the worse at a Stakeholder Advisory Committee meeting yesterday. Several influential business interests — including a representative of the Portland Development Commission (PDC) — expressed opposition motor vehicle access restrictions that many feel are key to turning NE Holladay Street into a low-stress bikeway.

First Look: People for Bikes’ “Bikes Make Life Better” video

People for Bikes, the national effort by Bikes Belong to raise awareness and support for bicycling, has just released a new video they hope will spread the idea that “Bikes Make Life Better.”

The short video, filmed in Los Angeles, uses projection technology to visually illustrate the impact bicycling has on cities. As riders — a woman on a Dutch bike, a profession commuter on a single-speed, and a group of BMX’ers — roll through the streets, birds, trees and waterfalls appear on structures around them.

Business leaders to headline Bike to Work Day event

The speakers have been announced for the National Bike to Work Day event being hosted by the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA). The event is dubbed “Bikes Mean Business,” and it will feature a trio of local business leaders who will expound on the benefits biking brings to the bottom line.

In addition to Congressman Earl Blumenauer and Portland Mayor Sam Adams (who has been sporting a “Jobs” pin on his lapel lately), the event will feature Chris DiStefano of Chris King Precision Components, Jennifer Nolfi of the Portland Development Commission (PDC) and Randy Miller, President of the Produce Row Property Management Company.

The timing and theme of the event are interesting given the recent kerfluffles in the Lloyd District where business interests (including the PDC) have stymied progress on several projects over concerns about perceived negative impacts to motor vehicle access (an update on that coming later today).

Solutions for Sandy

Sandy Blvd as it appears in the
Portland Bicycle Plan for 2030.
(Thin orange lines are “City Bikeways”)

Given the existing bicycling environment on NE Sandy Boulevard, you might be surprised to learn that the street officially classified as a “City Bikeway.”

Here’s how the Portland Bicycle Plan for 2030 (section 2.3.3), defines City Bikeways:

“They establish direct and convenient bicycle access to all significant destinations… and function to allow residents access to Portland’s bikeway network, ideally within three city blocks from any given point. They provide a mobility function and help establish the fine-grained network of a world-class bicycling city…

In City Hall last night, Portland’s bicycle transportation leaders heard from a group of kids that will likely replace them someday.

Six students from Laurelhurst School in Northeast Portland came to the City’s Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting to present a class project devoted to bicycle safety policy.

The students were part of a “Project Citizen” class where they were tasked with fixing a community problem. They chose to focus on bike safety, “since biking is such a huge part of Portland.”
