Clinic will educate press about biking/walking legal issues

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

“We’ve had positive responses from members of the press so far, which reinforces our hunch that a legal clinic for members of the press would be welcome as a resource.”
– Stephanie Routh, Willamette Pedestrian Coalition

On Tuesday (4/27), local non-profits the Willamette Pedestrian Coalition (WPC) and the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) will host a special legal clinic to educate members of the local media about the laws, legal rights and responsibilities of biking and walking.

Stephanie Routh is the executive director of the WPC. She hopes the clinic brings local journalists up to date on the latest biking and walking laws. “I think laws that involve pedestrians and cyclists are more complicated than most people realize… How to articulate those complex laws in context of a crash or a breaking issue is even more difficult, and we want to help provide resources for media for their future deadlines.”

The future of bikes coming to WebVisions conference

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

What do bikes have to do with high-tech? Plenty if you ask WebVisions conference founder Brad Smith and tech-expert and bike blogger D.L. Byron of BikeHugger.com.

They’ve teamed up for The (un)Wired Future of Bikes, an event that will be part of WebVisions when it comes to the Oregon Convention Center next month (May 19-20). The event will bring together “an eclectic lineup of bike builders, geeks, gearheads and inventors” who will share a series of short presentations ranging from the future of bike design to a look at new gadgets to “keep you connected while pedaling.” (Full rundown of presentations and speakers here).

N. Bryant Avenue.

This week, the City of Portland Bureau of Transportation will begin to install new signs and pavement markings on bike boulevard streets. The money for the project comes from a $1 million award the city received last year from the the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).

PBOT project manager Kyle Chisek said the first of these new signs and markings will be installed in Sellwood, the location of PBOT’s first of many “next generation bike boulevards.” Specifically, the new markings and signage will be installed on SE Spokane Street (6th Avenue to 19th Avenue), SE 19th Avenue (Spokane Street to Linn Street), and on SE Umatilla Street (6th Avenue to 23rd Avenue).

Description: Vintage, royal blue 5-speed ladies Schwinn World Tourist (1975ish?) with original matching fenders. The back tire is slightly different (and newer – i only rode on it 3 times) than the front. Huge basket on front, covered with fake flowers. Fake rose tied to handlebars. My spare u-lock was in the basket. Makes a clicking/knocking noise with every revolution of the pedals. No serial number – I’ve owned this bike for 5 years and have it somewhere along the way. Originally purchased at the Community Cycling Center (and I think there is still a sticker for it on there). Bike in photo is a twin – sadly I can’t find a single picture of mine.
