Despite appearances, that bike lane
continues through the intersection.

We’ve got more reaction and analysis on the infamous disappearing bike lane decision.

First, a quick review: Carmen Piekarski was right-hooked by a woman driving a car while biking through an intersection. Multnomah County Judge Pro Tem Michael Zusman ruled that the person driving was not guilty of “failure to yield to a bicyclist in a bike lane” because the paint striping of the bike lane was not present in the intersection where the collision occurred (therefore the victim was not “in the bike lane”).

Notice of Exclusion written to
Matt Cleinman for trespassing
in Waterfront Park.
Larger version (90kb jpg) –

At 4:30 am this morning, a Portland Police officer issued a Portland man a notice of exclusion and warning for trespassing because he was riding his bicycle through Waterfront Park while the park was closed.

Matt Cleinman, a 25-year old resident of Northwest Portland was biking home from work when he came upon a Portland Police Officer who he says was “rousing homeless folks” under the Burnside Bridge. Cleinman, who told us he is very concerned about “criminalizing homelessness” says he then stopped his bike to ask the officer what was going on.

The Transportation Research Board is wrapping up their Annual Meeting in Washington D.C. this week. For the uninitiated, the TRB’s mission is to “promote innovation and progress in transportation through research.” Our own Elly Blue attended (along with about 11,000 others) last year and dubbed it the Great Transportation Convergence.

Not surprisingly, there was a big contingent from Portland at this year’s conference. The Portland State University based Oregon Transportation Research and Education Consortium (OTREC) sent a team of staffers to present their latest research and network with others in the field.

2010 is shaping up to be the Year of Transportation in Portland (and beyond).

In December, we shared news that ODOT’s top guy in our region, Jason Tell, was pushing to make safety a higher priority. ODOT is also on a statewide tour to garner input on their Transportation Safety Action Plan and the leader of that project, Walt McAllister, has been in touch with us about the possibility of new and exciting ways they can connect with you bike safety concerns (stay tuned on that one).
