Weekend Event Guide

Get ready, it’s almost the weekend — and as usual, rain or shine, there are plenty of opportunities for learning and socializing, on and off the bikes.

Event guide below:

Thursday, October 15

5:00pm – 7:00pm: Car-Free Happy Hour
The monthly social and networking event for transportation and livability professionals as well as those with an interest in carless living has changed times (it’s now on the third Thursday of each month) and locations (it’s at the new Floyd’s Coffee Shop at 118 NW Couch). Drop in for beer, coffee, and hearing about people’s carfree stories/projects.

5:30pm – 7:30pm: 3rd Thursday Business on a Bike Ride
Prefer to do your networking while rolling? Meet at the Salmon Street Fountain for a leisurely, conversation-oriented ride.

8:00: We Just Work Here Film Screening and Social
A film screening, fundraiser, and social gathering with the people of Showers Pass, Portland Design Works, Ruckus Components, and Tonic Fabrication. Doors open at 6:30, film at 8:00. Event is a fundraiser for Oregon Food Bank and non-perishable food donations are requested.

Friday, October 16

10:00am: “Where Does Food Come From?” Dill Pickle Club Bike Ride
The final informational Dill Pickle tour of the season meets at Eyeful Gallery, 625 NW Everrett St #104. There’s a $15 registration fee for this ride between guided tours of local food production facilities, covering bread, beer, veggies, oatmeal, and more.

7:00pm – 10:00pm: Oregon Manifest: A Night with Joe Parkin
One of the first US bike racers to compete in Belgium talks about his experiences. For more on the event, see our write-up here. At the Oregon Manifest Bike Union, 539 NW 10th at Hoyt.

9:30pm – late: Dropout Freakbike Ride
Freaks, bikes, and freak bikes. Don’t plan to sleep. Colonel Summers Park.

Saturday, October 17

All day: Chris King Gourmet Century
The 2009 Gourmet Century is a scenic 103-kilometer non-competitive bicycle ride through Yamhill County, the hub of Oregon Wine Country, located less than an hour’s drive from downtown Portland.

8:30am: Fruit Loop Ride
An annual ride. Carpool out to Hood River and ride around to various fruit stands. Bring your big panniers. This ride still needs people with cars who can carry riders and bikes, so get in touch with Caroline if you’re interested in attending.

7:00pm: Scraper Bike Ride to the Free Store Grand Opening
The Portland Free Store is having its grand opening celebration tonight. The theme is Free Box Formal, so put on your finest found get up for the party — or dress your bike up too and join this ride, leaving from the east side Voodoo Donuts (NE 15th and Sandy).

Sunday, October 18

Cross Crusade #3 at Sherwood Equestrian Center
Mud and ‘cross racing! What more needs to be said?

6:00pm – 7:30pm: Winterizing Your Bike
A free Q & A session with the knowledgeable worker-owners at the CityBikes shop, SE 20th and Ankeny.

Another gathering for the community to consider:

What: ‘We are ALL Traffic’ Reunion Gathering. We will join family members of Tracey Sparling as they remove the ghost bike that has marked the place of her death, and we will gather at Ringlers to catch up over conversation and beverages.

When: Saturday, October 17, 2:00pm

Where: Ringlers Pub, 1332 W. Burnside, Portland

Why: It has been two years since the loss of Tracey Sparling and Brett Jarolimek, who were both killed while cycling legally on the streets of Portland. There is forward momentum in our community toward safer streets and more just policing, but WAAT must continue to gather, act and collaborate to support continued positive change.
