Weekend Ride Guide and Open Thread

Wintertime Palm Tree Ride

Bikes, Portland, and Palm Trees,
a perfect winter mix.

Welcome to the weekend (I know it’s still Friday but so what)! I hope you’ve got some riding in your plans. Here’s a quick guide to a few velo-options.

Some folks are out there right now on this month’s Kidical Mass ride. If you did it, please chime in and let us know how it went.

Also tonight, if freak bikes are more your cup of tea (and if you own some very warm clothes), check out the Dropout Freakbike ride.

On Saturday, the talented and fabulous Tori Bortman of Gracie’s Wrench is hosting one of her “Get Riding!” classes. Admission for this clinic is $15 and will cover all everything you need to know (and then some). Held at the Vanilla Bicycles Workshop (717 SE 35th Ave) from 10:30am – 12:30pm. More info here.

Sunday’s menu includes a bike move for SCRAP (a very cool non-profit) followed by one of Portland’s cherished traditions, Shawn Granton’s Wintertime Palm Tree Ride (check out our photos from years past.)

Also on Sunday is David Auker’s Fixed Gear Ride leaving from River City Bicycles (700 SE MLK) at 9:00 am. Auker is a Portland institution who has been rolling and racing around the city for decades. Sunday’s ride will be 20-plus miles of flat/rolling terrain with “one sweet little steepie”. Fixies or single-speeds are encouraged.

Have a great weekend, and don’t forget to share your fun adventures in the comments below…

Looking forward to a long weekend of riding in the sun. Started it off today (Saturday) with a short ride (42 m) out Scholl’s Ferry direction, with some steep climbing up Council Crest on the way home. Another longer westside ride planned for tomorrow, and then Monday I think it’s time for a Pete’s Mtn./Canby loop . . .

Rode downtown with my wife to see President-Elect Obama as he stopped here in Baltimore. Thanks to Nate Evans for organizing the free valet bike parking. Next time we’ll get the media to let people know it exists.
