The situation with the effort to re-use the Sauvie Island Bridge span in Northwest Portland is changing by the hour.

A post to the Portland Bike Forums caught my eye the other day. It was a message from Mrs. BJ Wilberding, wife of the late Mike Wilberding.

Mike was killed on August 1, 2006 when someone turned their car into his path as he rode home from work in Beaverton.

Now, Mrs. Wilberding wants to set up a foundation to give immediate financial aid to families of fallen cyclists.

Here’s the message she posted to the forums.

Mayor Potter has issued a statement to help further clarify his decision to vote against a proposal that would have allowed PDOT to turn the old Sauvie Island Bridge span into a new crossing of I-405 in Northwest Portland.

Potter made his decision at a key Council vote on the project last Wednesday. Prior to that vote, expecting he would be unable to attend the Council meeting, he issued a memo outlining why he did not support the project.

Supporters of a new velodrome on the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem suffered a setback last week when State Parks officials said they would not provide funds for the track.

The original proposal was to spend $130,000 to construct a temporary, wood-frame and plywood track to be housed in the Pavillion Building.

Steve Brown — a Portland-based businessman velodrome advocate who has been working on this project since last September — was already deep into the planning stages for events he hoped would begin at the Fair this summer.
