The intent of is to thank those already bicycling to downtown and to encourage those who are interested in bicycling to give it a try.

What: Bike to Work Celebration

Where: Pioneer Courthouse Square

Who: City Transportation Options Division, SmartTrips Downtown program

Why: This Bike to Work celebration is one of a host of activities designed to inspire and motivate everyone to get out cycling, especially as the weather improves. Bike rides and events promoting safety and physical activity aim to celebrate cycling and support cleaner and healthier living.

The SmartTrips Downtown and Transportation Options staff will serve up a continental breakfast to cyclists new and experienced upon arrival at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Experienced cyclists are encouraged to support their coworkers, friends, and neighbors who are new to cycling. Those new to cycling are encouraged to join in the fun and experience the ease of getting to downtown Portland on the city’s great bikeway network.

The SmartTrips Downtown program is an individualized marketing program that works with Downtown employers and employees to make commute trips healthier and less expensive. SmartTrips Downtown follows a simple premise: give downtown employees free information on their transportation options and a lot of them will make healthier transportation choices. The program offers free travel tools and support through downtown employers to their employees who would like to shift their daily commute trips from driving to alternatives such as transit, carpool, walking, and cycling. Seventy-five downtown employers – including Davis Wright Tremaine, Merrill Lynch, NW Natural, Portland General Electric, and Portland State University – have participated so far, and 18,000 downtown employees have been contacted.
