The Portland-based Bicycle Transportation Alliance hopes that friendly competition is what will get more Portland schoolkids walking and biking to school.
They’ve just opened registration for the first-ever Walk + Bike to School Challenge. The event, modeled after their highly successful Bike Commute Challenge which is focused on Oregon businesses, will challenge kids across the Portland metro area to walk and bike to school more often.

They’ve published an email from one of their readers who writes:
“We have a 2 year old and a 7 year old and are wanting to get the family bike setup on a budget. We were thinking of looking on Craigslist or at a used bike shop but we don’t really know what to look for.”

This morning was (I think) the year’s first snow-filled morning commute! It didn’t stick for too long and it wasn’t as major as last year, but it was still fun.
I headed to work into a flurry of white flakes and a few minutes into my ride I ran into my old friend (and fellow Piedmont resident), Tony Tapay. It was nice to have a bit of company, not to mention a willing model for a few photos…

In yet another sign that bicycling is gaining traction with Oregon’s tourism industry, the upcoming Governor’s Conference on Tourism will feature a workshop on bike friendly communities.

35 year-old Salem resident T. Kenji Sugahara is the new leader of the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association (OBRA), a non-profit of over 3,000 annual members that promotes racing throughout the state. The announcement came at an OBRA board meeting earlier this month.

Non-profit hopes ‘Baristas for Bikes’ leads to bikes in Rwanda
Local non-profit Bikes to Rwanda has launched a new effort to raise awareness and funds for their programs.

Bikes to Rwanda was founded last year by Stumptown Coffee’s Duane Sorenson. Their mission is to provide cargo bikes to coffee farmers in Rwanda and to establish bike shops in the communities once the bikes are there.
Their new effort, dubbed “Baristas for Bikes” will launch at the upcoming Western Region Barista Competition being held in Berkeley, California at the end of March.
