A few minutes ago, endurance cyclist and Hillsboro resident John Spurgeon — whose story I shared on Monday — surged into Atlantic City New Jersey and became the first person to ever complete the grueling Race Across America on a singlespeed.

The story on the front page of the RAAM website simply says, “Single Speed History: He freaking did it!!!!!!!!”

Riding on frames built by Portlanders Ira Ryan and Sacha White, Spurgeon completed 3042 miles in 12 days with an average speed of 10.5 miles per hour.

Facing a possibility of not making the cutoff in the final days, Spurgeon went without sleep and rode all night to ensure his historic feat.

If this 1960s Carlton is
your style, you’ll love the
Vintage Velo ride.

If Cinelli, Gitane, and Holdsworth mean anything to you, than this Sunday’s Vintage Velo ride is sure to satisfy.

Last Memorial Day, Portlander Larry Myers (who rides ’77 Gitane tandem with his sweetheart) spread the word for a ride where only pre-1986 lightweight road, track and touring bikes were welcome. 40 people showed up and the ride was such a success that he plans to do it every month.

Vintage Velo Ride

@ Community Cycling Center, 1700 NE Alberta

Here we go again- Portland Vintage Velo is holding it’s second in a series of vintage bike rides! The focus of our loosely-knit group is lightweight road, track, and touring bikes built no later than 1986. We had 40 people show up for the first ride, on Memorial Day; we expect an even better turnout for this one!

The planned route is as follows: We will start at the Community Cycling Center, 1700 NE Alberta, in NE PDX, @ 11am. From the CCC, we will ride through NoPo, to the St. Johns Bridge, cross the river, and head for Sauvie’s Island, then return to the CCC.

Total mileage will be about 30 (mostly flat)miles. This is a relaxed, non-competitive ride, and riders of all skill levels are invited. We will regroup frequently; no one will be left behind.
