It was another very busy bike weekend.
You know the drill. I’ll mention a few events, and hopefully you’ll share your adventures and reports in the comments. Ready. Set. Go…
Things got started early Saturday morning with the annual Reach the Beach ride. Riders from all over Oregon descended on Pacific City to raise money for the American Lung Association.
Unfortunately, according to this post in the Forums, there was a bad crash. I hope everyone’s OK.
Also on Saturday was the public grand opening of the completion of the Three Bridges Project. These bridges have vastly improved the connectivity of the popular Springwater Corridor Trail and the event was a big success. I explored the action with my daughters and I’ll do a separate report soon (take a sneak peak at my photos).
Sunday was yet another bike move. This time the moving crew pedaled from the NE Alberta area to St. Johns.
Some other strong cyclists used their legs to power them through the corners of the Swan Island Criterium, hosted by the Presto Velo racing team.

From cargo bikes to race bikes, this recap ends with tall bikes.
Last night was the first of several tall bike construction workshops in preparation for the Stumptown Joustdown coming up on June 9th (during Pedalpalooza).
OK, now don’t be shy… What did you do on your bike this weekend?
Thanks for reading.

On Sunday, there was also a mountain bike race in Falls City – ‘The Falls City Firecracker’.
It was pretty wet, but still very, very fun.
The BikeMove was excellent and a great turn out! 24 bikes/trailers and an excellent time. Donuts and coffee to start, pizza and beer at the desination.. and fun and some great community all the way through! ( Welcome to St Johns, Babs!)
Oregon Randonneurs’ 400k, from Newberg to the outskirts of Eugene and back. 16 hours, 5 minutes. Beautiful, quiet route. Just one more ride until I’m PBP qualified!
thank you, Dat, for taking a picture of the under-photographed Maus cadre. also to folks on the bike move. it was the best-corked move ever!
I did the OR Randonneurs 400k along with Michael. Not so much “along” with him though because he finished 3 hours before I did.
When are the other tall bike workshops happening?
P Finn,
Every sunday night for the next few weeks. if you’d like to go email me directly. they’re at someone’s private residence and not sure if they want info public.
On Saturday at the Art Hop on Alberta, bikes were way present in the parade from the Unicyclists, to Clown/Tall Bikes (Awesome Flyer Tall Bike) to the Beligerante (sp>) Gang!
And Bab’s Bike move enjoyed a rainless window of sky for our own parade of stuff to St. Johns. So many cars stopped, yelling out the window – what is this!? Bike Move we all gleeful yelled back.
okay it rained a little, but not heavy like the afternoon. Thank you bike move gods.
I was a “Medical Rider” for Reach the Beach. In an Email update of the day, the head of our group said he did see one person who was probably involved in the accident you referred to, resulting from “a tangle of 2 bikes”. His helmet was split, but not his head. Thought I’d reassure everyone and also provide more evidence, if any were needed, that we should ALL be wearing helmets. Otherwise, happily a good and safe event.
Thanks so much for this website and happy biking to all.
Ed
Nate,Don’t feel bad. I finished more than
four hours after you.
(But I did stop for a sit-down taco diner)
The official numbers are not yet in but it looks like there were record numbers of riders on Reach the Beach this year – over 2,200 riders cycling in support of the American Lung Association of Oregon. Among them many great folks out there I saw Ira Ryan and Tony Pereira of Team Framebuilders, the fine ladies of Too Hot for Handlebars and others.
You can see some really awesome photos of the day here:

That first photo you’ll see is the team that rode with a rider who has one lung. They all wore signs that said “Helper – two lungs” and Brian’s said “Rider – one lung”. You can also see a photo of Brian’s story on the Reach the Beach website.
Hope to see tons of you out there next year!
Some friends and I did our own little reach the beach ride. We rode from Hilsboro to the 3 capes park on the coast, near Tillamook. We found an awesome route on the City of Portland’s web site:

The ride was very scenic – loved it!! We spent the night in the camp ground and then came back the next day.
Adam, how was that ride? I’m trying to find recommendations for a decent route to Rockaway Beach, and that route is close although it ends up a bit south of where I’d like to finish.
That was my first Century last weekend. It went smoother than I thought, even with the headwind. No rain, thankfully.
I’ve been having a blast at the Village Building Convergence. We took a bike tour of the sites in inner southeast and northeast. We learned about straw-clay building, bioswales, and I helped with an intersection repair. The conference is going on all week at Disjecta and you can view the sites at City Repair’s website.

Being part of the VBC has helped me improve my outlook. I’m softening my approach as I make a point to connect positively with people at the even even if they’re (shhh) driving. By creating a positive connection first, my values are more respected.
