I hope you got the chance to take in the sun over the weekend.
Did anyone make it out to the season’s first mountain bike race?
I didn’t do much riding, but I went to OMSI with my daughter and spent some time soaking up the sun on the Eastbank Esplanade… along with a steady stream of cyclists.
Did you make it out for a ride? I’d love to hear about it…
Thanks for reading.

Surprised I didn’t see you this weekend as I rode past that spot several times. The family loaded up and we rode Springwater all the way to 92nd, had a picnic and rode home. Stopped to pick up chocolate cheesecake on the way back for tea. Doesn’t get much better than that.
Michael.
Heck with my weekend, how bout the ride to work this morning!!
I broke 4 ribs 6 weeks ago and holy cow but that was really painful. I’ve never been so hobbled. The first week, just walking around the block was an accomplishment. I actually had to drive the dozen blocks to the MAX station for a few weeks to get to work. The horror.
A couple of weeks ago I had a mediocre few days of riding, but it was slow and every crack in the road brought tears to my eyes. And then I caught a cold and yikes, stiffness, coughing, piled onto mending broken ribs!? Oy. I was able to ride the cruiser to the park with the dog, but to work?? No way.
This morning!!!!!!!!!!! An amazing day and I rode to work and was out of the saddle and feeling great!
The heck with the weekend, I rode to work this morning!
I explored Kelly Butte park on my mountain bike. It is a wild, strange place with a lot of history in Portland. I think it could be a good mountain bike area as well.
I rented a tandem bike this weekend in Malaysia and rode along the bay with a friend. It was a pretty rickety ride, but we had a lot of fun zooming along by the shore. Being able to ride a bike while far from home made me realize that tourism is just one more reason to support bike rentals in portland.

Tried to join the ECT Kelly Pt ride en route Sunday, but they never showed up at the Expo Ctr Max stop (turns out they just rode the whole way, those crazy kids!).
So I went on by myself–& what a glorious day for a ride. Marine Drive isn’t so bad on a Sunday, and the bit over by Smith & Bybee was downright bucolic. A long ride for this thoroughly recreational rider, but worth it. And so nice to find the bike trail, finally (just needed a little noodge in the right direction).
Hope everyone had as much fun!
I made it to the first race of the season (and my first mtb race ever). It was a ton of fun racing, heck I’ve only owned a mtb for about a month and a half but I placed pretty high in the sport class (I’m pretty sure, official results haven’t been posted). Horning’s Hideout is fantastic and the terrain makes for great riding. Big hills, deep mud and friendly people made for a great day.
I will say that I am sorry for anyone who was riding with rim brakes.
It was a wonderful weekend. My three year old daughter and I went on her longest bike ride to date, a little over a mile and a half round trip, and she knew which street to turn on to get back home! I think those training wheels are coming off soon…
Saturday I went to the Milwaukie TSP Update Bike/Ped meeting – Jonathan, details are in your inbox. It was productive, a lot of bike-related issues in Milwaukie were identified.
Sunday I went out for a 50+ mile training ride, and ran into the ECT riders on Interstate. So I joined them for a bit and went out to Kelly Point park. I’ve never been out there before, and the weather was beautiful. I split off from them there, and rode Marine Drive out to the I-205 bike path and down in to home. 55 miles and I never left Portland / Milwaukie. What a great ride.
I thought about doing the ECT ride Sunday, too, but couldn’t turn down the unexpected chance to play tennis for the first time since last summer. I biked, of course, to the courts in NW, then we rode (OK, gasped) up Thurman to Forest Park (my first time there, as I’m relatively new to town), then back down the hill and over to the river path, so I could see the remnants of the blossoms on the trees at Waterfront Park. After all the rain Friday, it sure was nice to get a surprise taste of sunshine and yet another reminder why I live in Portland now!
This weekend my GF and I biked 6km from Puerto Viejo to Punta Uva (costa rica) to do some snorkling.
Oh man were the road bUmPy!
But the snorkling was great!

Is it Spring in Portland yet?
We did a quick ride up Mt. Tabor, which thrilled the senses with blossoms falling like snow and sweet scents dancing on the breeze.
Later, we rode to dinner on the cruisers with a friend who hadn’t ridden a coaster brake bike since childhood. The experience made Brian burst into laughter and we all had wide smiles as we pedaled up Tillamook.
I too was at the meeting in Milwaukie as well as the Horining’s Hideout Mt. Bike event. The Milwaaukie meeting was productive, although some nitpicking IMHO. (One gentleman named the Spring water as a trouble issue as the pavement was a little rough in sections. I am just glad to have the trail paved at all, and ride it regularly. I am new to this, so maybe the cream will rise to the top and the important things will get funded.
The Race was awesome. The sun came out, and everyone seemed to be having a good time, although the conditions were muddy and slick. This was my first race as well, and it felt a lot like Cyclocross races I have attended. Great vibe! They had double the expected amount of riders, so races were delayed a little, but no big deal. Did I mention I love living here?
i made it to horning’s hideout as well, and it was my first mtn. bike race too. i did the single-speed category and had rim brakes and a gear that was too high. i hurt lots now, but i had a blast and will do many more races.
i was the guy on the bright orange, triple triangle gt =D
As summer approaches, the crowd on the hill grows and last night’s crowd was truly a crowd. New faces and old enjoyed the glorious weekly union of public transportation and gravity that is Zoobomb.
Sage rode his enormous gravity trike. Gabriel Amadeus took his new Schwinn mini speed chopper for a virgin run. There were no skateboards, but quite a few 12″s and a few tall bikes.
A motorist, with window rolled down, drove alongside some folks on Hellway and offered support and conversation rarely heard while bicycling down a highway at night. What was the motorist driving? A Mini, of course.
Trimet was extra-friendly with the MAX operator holding the train for straggling bombers, tooting the horn at the Washington Park stop for us, and wishing us “a good run” over the PA.
Gravity was especially crucial last night as 3rd run consisted of a gravity race (no pedaling). It was quite the field-leveller, featuring some slow-speed pileups, lots of boasting, and some cheating. I have no idea who won, but The Blind Bomber and his pilot blew by me at a frightening clip at the bottom of the Speed Hole.
And to think: this happens every Sunday night. Join us sometime. It’s fun!
Sunday AM I got up early, noted snow on the low hills, got all garbed up in my wet/cold ride gear and met a dozen or so folks for a ride only to see the sun come out! One of our group had a brand spanking new Tri bike and demonstrated that she knew how to make it run! It was a glorious day for a bike ride.
No riding this weekend – a rare event – instead I spent the weekend hiking in the Wallowa Mountains with my non-cyclist hubby. The highlight of the trip (not counting the spectacular views from the Chief Joseph Trail) was the field trip to the Terminal Gravity brewery and pub in Enterprise. Well worth the 5.5 hour drive from Portland.
Cecil: Although I was able to get a quick 25 miler Sunday in the Zoo/Arboretum/West Hills, I do drool in envy with your field trip to Terminal Gravity – one of the best brew houses in the high plains! I did have a TG IPA last night at the Moon & Sixpence, however!
Dreaming of the Wallowas… can’t wait to get back…
Mmmmm… T G
Peder and AO, you can check out my picture of the TG keg cooler on flickr.com for some vicarious enjoyment

The best part was that you can get a case of the IPA to take home for $22 . . .
Thanks for the photo… I miss that place!
Best time to go is in the afternoon, at quitting time. That’s when the employees hang out with the visitors. Yes, a much better deal than 7-8 USD/6.
Attornatus_Oregonensis,
Did you ever get a chance to Zoobomb? Terminal Gravity and Zoobomb is a winning combination (and not just because of the name). Sounds like Peder may have mixed the two (plus many miles and lots of pedaling) on Sunday as well…
“Terminal Gravity and Zoobomb is a winning combination (and not just because of the name).”
In that case, maybe the Zoobombers should consider getting TG to brew a Terminal Velocity beer.
The Zoobomb Extra Special IPA. I like that idea.
Quick question: What’s the closest pub to the Zoobomb start serving TG? I believe it is M-bar on NW 21st.
Anyhoo, no I have not done Zoobomb yet. It is merely a matter of (a short) time. I … will … Zoobomb.
As for the weekend, I spent Sunday riding around to various shops looking for my Holy Grail: The super-lightweight x-country mtn bike. It made for a good ride, as I hit several shops. The tax return has been deposited, the evening light has returned, and my dreams are filled with visions of singletrack. It won’t be long now…
I had planned a longer ride for the weekend, but a cold and household chores shortened my ride.
I wound up taking a leisurely loop through the Alameda neighborhood to admire the blooming beauty all around. I took NE Going up into the 20’s, over to Skidmore and up to 43rd, over to NE Beech and then out to the cemetery, where I looped around the back and then home again.
I pedaled slowly and stuck to quiet residential streets to savor the daffodils, dogwoods and the breeze, admiring the look of the sun peeking through the fast-moving clouds. I wasn’t really intent on going anywhere, but just going. Aimless, delicious, beautifully lazy riding on a late Sunday afternoon.
Yum.
