Portland plans for bike sharing system

City Commissioner Sam Adams has stepped up his effort to bring a bicycle-sharing system to Portland.

Although still in “preliminary stages,” Adams’ staffer Max Coffman — who works with Adams and Senior Policy Director Roland Chlapowski on special transportation projects — told me today that he is preparing an official request for proposals to find a company that can deploy a system in Portland similar to the “Velo’V” system (which Adams saw in action during a visit to Lyon, France) and the “Cyclocity” system currently used in Brussels.

Can a big, successful bike shop still have a soul?

In Portland, we’re lucky to have a diverse and plentiful selection of bike shops. They run the gamut from a garage shop run by kids to some of the best shops in the country.

Last week, after I posted about how the Bike Gallery — which has six stores in the area and is one of the top Trek dealers in the world — was named one of the “Top 100” bikes shops nationwide, I received a negative comment from someone who challenged the store’s environmental practices and claimed the employees were “souless” (among other things).

Metro hearing on bike project funding tonight

I’m a bit late on this, but a very important opportunity for public input on Metro projects is happening at 5:30 tonight at their headquarters on 600 NE Grand Ave.

From the Oregonian:

“The Metro Council will hold a public hearing at 5:30 tonight on transportation projects that will split about $45 million in special flexible federal funds.”

This morning, commuters were welcomed into downtown Portland with smiles, pastries, patch kits, coffee and, um, condoms.

Yes, it was a special “Bike Love” edition of the monthly Breakfast on the Bridges tradition.

Cyclists were treated to specially baked cookies, bright pink signs with words of gratitude, and even helpful tips on how to show your faithful, two-wheeled steed some love. One sign read:
