City Commissioner Sam Adams has stepped up his effort to bring a bicycle-sharing system to Portland.
Although still in “preliminary stages,” Adams’ staffer Max Coffman — who works with Adams and Senior Policy Director Roland Chlapowski on special transportation projects — told me today that he is preparing an official request for proposals to find a company that can deploy a system in Portland similar to the “Velo’V” system (which Adams saw in action during a visit to Lyon, France) and the “Cyclocity” system currently used in Brussels.
"Share the Road" diversion class now official
Back in June, I wrote about a new traffic citation diversion class that would be offered to bicyclists. Then in October, the man behind the class — Multnomah County Judge Pro Tem Christopher Larsen — shared more details about the class with the Portland Bicycle Advisory Committee.
Would you join a neighborhood bike patrol?

the Piedmont neighborhood, 8/2/05]
OK everyone, here’s your chance to let the City of Portland know that volunteer, neighborhood bike patrols would be a new program worthy of their support.
First, some background.
I recently met with stakeholders from the Mayor’s Office, the Office of Neighborhood Involvement, the county District Attorney, and the Police Bureau.
Can a big, successful bike shop still have a soul?
In Portland, we’re lucky to have a diverse and plentiful selection of bike shops. They run the gamut from a garage shop run by kids to some of the best shops in the country.
Last week, after I posted about how the Bike Gallery — which has six stores in the area and is one of the top Trek dealers in the world — was named one of the “Top 100” bikes shops nationwide, I received a negative comment from someone who challenged the store’s environmental practices and claimed the employees were “souless” (among other things).
Tribune cover story features BTA staffer

The Portland Tribune — just named the nation’s best non-daily newspaper — has a familiar face on its front cover currently in newsstands across Portland.
Michelle Poyourow, the BTA’s events and outreach director is featured in an article about Portland’s young movers and shakers.

Metro hearing on bike project funding tonight
I’m a bit late on this, but a very important opportunity for public input on Metro projects is happening at 5:30 tonight at their headquarters on 600 NE Grand Ave.
From the Oregonian:
“The Metro Council will hold a public hearing at 5:30 tonight on transportation projects that will split about $45 million in special flexible federal funds.”
Cyclists smitten on Velotines Day
This morning, commuters were welcomed into downtown Portland with smiles, pastries, patch kits, coffee and, um, condoms.
Yes, it was a special “Bike Love” edition of the monthly Breakfast on the Bridges tradition.
Cyclists were treated to specially baked cookies, bright pink signs with words of gratitude, and even helpful tips on how to show your faithful, two-wheeled steed some love. One sign read:
