Updated map of downtown’s covered bike parking

Due to the behemoth Portland Bus Mall reconstruction project, downtown traffic is snarled and gnarled all over the place.

For smart Portlanders this is a perfect time to consider biking into work. But no one wants to leave their bike out in the wet and cold…so what to do?

Well, I just noticed that PDOT has recently updated their map of all the covered bike parking spots downtown.

Check out the map. Your bike will love you for it.

Great! I have been wondering if the city (and others) underserve a large group of bicyclists who don’t want to leave their bikes in the wet and the dark, but don’t need a fully secured and obscured (and expensive! about $1,000 per) bike locker. Surely some of the people using the TriMet lockers at transit centers would be satisfied with covered parking, freeing up expensive lockers for folks who really want them (of course, this is its own complicated issue, since the lockers are free, making it hard ensure they’re actually being used and hard to tell who really wants them).

I’d like to see more covered bike parking, and I’ve heard that at least some of it will come with the transit mall. The first way to raise its profile is to put it on a map. Thanks POoT!

That is so excellent putting that on the bike map.

Surprisingly, there’s over 700 spaces of covered bike parking in the downtown/Pearl; it’s just really hard to find, unless prowling around parking garages is your idea of fun. Hence the map.

And, if you know of any parking of the covered & reasonably useable rack variety that’s not shown on the map, let me know where it is & I’ll update it at the next opportunity –
