Lieutenant Mark Kruger, 2nd in command at the Police Bureau’s Traffic Division had this to say about this morning’s enforcement action at Broadway and Flint:

“Today we worked a mission at Broadway and Flint because we have a complaint from the Water Bureau of bicyclists running the stop sign there and creating a hazard. PDOT informs us that this intersection is the third highest bike crash intersection in the city. The public can expect more enforcement of the area to come.”

Enforcement action near Broadway Bridge

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

This just in from BikePortland correspondent Carl Larson:

Portland Police Bureau motorcycle officers are currently conducting an enforcement sting on NE Broadway Blvd. as it approaches the east side of the Broadway bridge.

If you’re headed that way, consider this a friendly reminder to be on your best behavior.

If you were stopped and/or ticketed, please consider sharing your experiences so that others can learn from your transgressions.

Life with a trailer…and without a car

Debbie's Bike Move

[Patrick and friends load
up an old stove.]

Portland resident Patrick David Barber doesn’t own a car, but that doesn’t stop him from being self-sufficient and hauling all sorts of loads on his bike.

Here are just some of the things he’s carried:

  • An industrial-strength dehumidifier
  • A table saw
  • A carpet-cleaning machine
  • A vintage sewing machine (during a bike move, see photo)
  • A 200-pound hog, for a friend’s pig roast

For Patrick, giving up his car was the culmination of much more than simply finding a good trailer. In an essay he wrote for Bicycle Fixation, he says:

filmed flyer

[Last year’s event poster was
drawn by Shawn Granton]

Filmed by Bike is Portland’s very own bike film festival. Now in its fifth year, the fest has grown from 80 people in a cafe its first year, to 550 people packing into the Clinton Street Theater last year.

This year, organizer Ayleen Crotty will offer three days of screenings (April 13-15) and it’s sure to be better than ever.

But what’s a film fest without any films? Why not make a little movie and send it on in? Last year my favorite films were done by local, first-time movie-makers.

Passing etiquette: In defense of the bike bell

About two years ago, I invested $3.50 on a bell for my bicycle. It was one of those “I heart my bike” ones. It has a tinny but audible double ring. And it is by far the best bicycle accessory or bit of gear I have ever had.

I got the bell after talking with an older woman who said she loved bicyclists but was fed up with them zooming past her with nary a warning on her daily walks across the Broadway Bridge. When she was a girl in the ’40s, she told me, every single bicycle was equipped with a bell, and every person in her generation still automatically reacts to that sound by moving to the right to make way for a cyclist passing on the left.

Christmas comes early for hundreds of kids

CCC's Holiday Bike Drive

[Anxiously awaiting
her new bike.]

At Legacy Emanuel Hospital yesterday, weeks of hard work paid off when over 400 kids were cured of their longing for a new set of wheels. The Community Cycling Center’s 11th annual Holiday Bike Drive was just what the doctor ordered.

This year, the kids not only got to pick out a new bike, they also learned how to ride it and stay safe while doing so.

Throughout the morning, waves of kids and their parents — who were specially selected through partnering social service agencies — got fitted for free helmets, picked out a new bike, and then went through a series of educational mini-clinics before setting off with their new wheels.
