[*UPDATE: According to project manager Jean Senechal-Biggs, my source for this story misunderstood the plans. PDOT is building the foundations for these right now and the actual structures aren’t scheduled to be installed until Spring.]

Way back in September 2005, I wrote about a series of exciting new bike parking facilities in the plans of the Hawthorne Boulevard Project.

That project is well under way and I just heard from a source at PDOT that these “Bike Oases” are scheduled for installation “any day now.” sometime this Spring.

Oregonian picks up Velodrome story

The effort to create a new velodrome facility for track racing in Portland continues to the pick up steam. After reading my article last Tuesday, Boaz Herzog from the Oregonian filed a similar story that made the front page of today’s Sports section.

Organizers behind the velodrome effort are setting up a website, gathering pledges and community support and plan to meet with Commissioner Sam Adams to see how a new velodrome would figure into existing plans to establish a major, professional bike race in Portland.

I’ll keep you posted with any further developments.

Naked Ride incident goes to court Wednesday

This Wednesday, a colorful and well-known character in Portland’s bike scene, will find himself in court facing 2.5 years in jail.

Reverend Phil Sano is on trial for an incident that happened during the World Naked Bike Ride on June 10, 2006.

Based on eyewitness statements, and reports published in the Portland Tribune and the Oregonian, here’s a brief summary of what transpired.

As the large, 500+ person ride entered W Burnside from NW Third, Phil attempted to safely merge the group onto the roadway by stepping in front of oncoming motor vehicle traffic (this is sometimes called “corking”).
