Rolling with the Southeast Bike Patrol

On a bike-along in SE Precinct

[Officers Quick (L) and
Pickett (R) on
Hawthorne Blvd.]

Back in October I joined Officers Rob Quick and Robert Pickett of the Portland Police Bureau for a bike-along.

Pickett and Quick are on the Southeast Portland Bike Patrol whose enforcement boundaries cover everything from SE Hawthorne Blvd. to I-84, and I-205 down to the Esplanade.

I wanted to gain a perspective on the streets from a bike cop’s point-of-view, learn more about the bike patrol, get to know the officers a little better, and compare this experience to my previous ride-along in a patrol car back in August.

Bike Move for Ernie

[Overloaded? No such thing!]

What do I love most about Portland’s bike community? That’s impossible to answer, but very high on the list would have to be bike moves.

A call for patience and a new paradigm

As we debate stop signs, police enforcement, targeting of bicyclists (or not), and the definition of a brake, let’s clearly draw one distinction.

On the one hand, there is the idea, often brought out at times like this, that some (or most) bicyclists think they are above the law.

On the other hand, there is a growing upset in the bike community over particular laws, and the enforcement and interpretation of them in certain circumstances.

Stolen Schwinn World Traveller

I pieced this bike together with 700c wheels, three speed handlebars, a black spring seat, silver plastic fenders, single piece crank, and both a coaster brake and a front hand brake. It is a very unique looking bike because of the color. Any lead would be much appreciated. Thanks!
