OregonLive bike blogger and Washington County resident Peter LaPorte says Washington County is finally planning to add safety improvements to the intersection of West Union and Helvetia Roads.
This is the intersection where Mike Kalan was killed back on September 15th.

30 year-old Northeast Portland resident Fabian Mills used to manage the Starbucks store on 102nd and Halsey near the Gateway Transit Center.
Back in August he rode his bike to a district meeting and got a surprising reaction from his new district manager, Frances Ericson. Here’s how it went down according to Mills:
“She pulled me aside and said she would prefer that I drove to the meeting. She asked me if I even had a car and then said it was inappropriate to ride my bike. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing but she actually said she would prefer if I drove a car and that it was unprofessional to ride a bike to work.”
Stumptown Coffee founder Duane Sorenson makes regular trips to farms around the world to source his prized beans. On a recent trip to a coffee co-op in Rwanda, he asked one of the farmers if there was anything Stumptown could do to help them out.
The answer? He just wanted a bike.
This request resonated with Sorenson and with the help of some of his bike-loving clientele back in Portland, Bikes to Rwanda was born.

Yesterday I ventured out to Hillsboro Stadium for the 2nd race of the Cross Crusade series. It was my first cross event of the season, and although I didn’t race, I still managed to have fun, get muddy, and after shooting over 600 photos, I was even a bit tired.
On Saturday, Portland officially opened the Pier Park Skatepark. Amid an eager crowd of hundreds, Parks Commissioner Dan Saltzman, Mayor Tom Potter, Commissioner Sam Adams, local skating advocates and St. Johns community members cut the ribbon on what is the first of 19 new skateparks coming to Portland.
In addition to skaters, bikers also showed up to test themselves on the new pools, rails, and full-pipe. I rode out to St. Johns to check out the action, but I locked my bike up at the entrance.
