The Cross Crusade series continues this Sunday at Horning’s Hideout, 35 minutes (by car) west of Portland in North Plains. It’s the third race in the six race series.

Adventures in journalism
of CrankMyChain TV]
This morning I huddled among a big crowd in the wind and rain as Portland officially dedicated the Three Bridges on the Springwater Corridor Trail (photos and a report coming later).
The event, which started in Sellwood, was an opportunity to interview some of Portland’s key transportation visionaries and leaders. To this end, I met up with Dan Kaufman, fledgling flimmaker behind CrankMyChain Bicycle TV. Dan is working with PDOT on a short film about Portland transportation that will be one of many shown at the big film event next weekend (10/28).
Tonkin on training: Don’t stress out
Sometimes, you just gotta wait for it. Here’s the situation…
When I was out of town racing the other weekend, I heard that back home my pal Jeffrey was sick and couldn’t race. He’d trained well at our Thursday early morning ‘cross practice, and he was excited for the weekend’s two races, neither of which were big, hyper ‘Cross Crusade events and so were tailor-made for training.
Falling ill wasn’t part of the plan.

“Putting a bike lane on Broadway in the first place was one of the Dumbest Ideas Ever. And not like a fun, riding your bike while it’s on fire type Dumb Idea.”

Post: Benson Hotel gets new bike lane markings
Note: I picked this comment not only because I think it adds some valuable insight into what was a heated discussion, but because it’s rare that we get the unmistakable C.H.U.N.K. perspective on the issues.

Bikey journalist moves on
Angela Valdez, the well-known staff writer at the Willamette Week has left the local independent weekly and will now ply her trade at The Stranger up in Seattle.
Angela is probably best known for a defining moment that will forever connect her to bikes and Portland.
On July 27th, 2005 she was hit by a car at NE 15th and Prescott and nearly paralyzed forever. The cover story she wrote just one month later titled, “Biker, Interrupted” is the most honest and sobering bit of writing I’ve ever seen in the Willy Week.
